mark_ethridge
Lisa, no the lens in your link is an old FD manual focus lens. That was Canon's system prior to EOS. Look for the EF designation.

John Crowe
I could only find a 70-210/3.5-4.5 USM on eBay, but at least it gives you a reference. This lens and the 100-300/4.5-5.6 USM do not take converters.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Canon-EF-70-210mm-f-3-5-4-5-USM-Lens-/221201181828?pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item33809e2c84

Here is a Canon EF 1.4x original that could be used on the 200/2.8 L:

http://www.keh.com/camera/Canon-EOS-Lens-Converters/1/sku-CE10999037253K?r=FE

Here is a refurbished Canon EF 70-200/4 L from adorama on ebay but the price is too high in my opinion. If you google "canon refurbished" you will find Canon USA's own store too, but there price for a refurb is the same as b&h new!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Canon-EF-70-200mm-f-4L-USM-Lens-Refurbished-2578A006AA-/370706223896?pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item564fd01318

You could always try one of the inexpensive zooms, that I linked to, for a season and if you don't like it you could sell it for pretty much what you paid for it. For fun shots of the kids playing soccer and printing up to 5x7, and for video, these zooms are nice because they are much lighter than the fast primes or fast zooms.
lisa_slavin
THANK YOU, JOHN! I have looked on the sites you sent links to ...at this point I just have to pick one and jump in. john_r._fulton_jr.
The best sports lens you could get would be the 70-200 f2.8. Investing in lenses is always a good thing (compared to buying camera bodies). If you're shooting sports four days a week the versatility and quality of the 70-200 will make you wonder why you'd consider anything else. On those days you step indoors and shoot basketball or some other indoor sports you'll be happy with f2.8. On those outdoor days when you want to have the background blurred as much as possible you'll love the f2.8 also. Good luck with your photography.
phule
It sure is easy to spend someone else's money, isn't it? It's so much easier to fire the "buy the best, only the best" gun without any regard to budget, the question posed, or the reality of a brand new photographer using such a lens.

I'm sure you'd recommend a Ferrari 458 to someone who just passed their driving test and needed their first car.
lisa_slavin
I am still considering the EF 200 2.8 best price is $569-$599 .. but definitely considering the EF 55-250 IS Rob suggested earlier... I just missed a new one on Ebay for $225. We won't go indoors until Nov so this might do for a start .....
Still looking around ... but pull the trigger soon....
Thanks!
lisa_slavin
I may consider trading in my Dad's Nikon N8008 film, Nikon AF macro 105mm 2.8 lens, Vivitar 1 series AF macro lens, and Tamron F 28-80 mm Lens ... not sure what I could get ..but there all kinds of accessories in the bag as well ...

lisa_slavin
OK, you guys are going to kill me....
thinking the EF 55-250 2.8 IS ($170.00 new) may be OK...would love the $600 EF 200 prime (used) but might be a bit much for a newbie with it stretching budget in a big way.
But what about the EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM ? New it is can be had for $360-$390.
Right in the middle .... The lion's share of my pix are outside ... softball and soccer field, ocean pix of seals .... sunsets, kids in the woods, etc ... some wildlife ..
