chet_creider
There is quite a lot of discussion on the internet about using M42 mount lenses on Nikon DSLRs but I can't find any dealing with the use of these lenses on early F-series cameras. The discussion focuses (sorry) on the impossibility of infinity focusing. There are also a number of companies selling M42-to-F-mount adapters. Does the same problem with infinity focusing exist using M42 lenses on Nikon SLRs? Specifically a Pentax SMC Takumar 105mm f/3.5 on a Nikon F2. If this usage is practical, I would appreciate a recommendation for adapter make. Thanks.
Michael R Freeman
Doesn't matter if if is a D4 from 2012 or an F2 from 1972. Same basic F-mount. Same register distance. Same issue with no focus at infinity unless the adapter has a lens element to compensate.

rodeo_joe1
Apart from the register problem you'd also lose the auto aperture stop-down feature, and even if M42 lenses would fit into the Nikon throat, you'd have to use caution. Some M42 lenses project a long way into the mirror box and would foul the mirror of a Nikon. Pentax/Praktica cameras are fitted with a smallish mirror that swings clear of those lenses, but they'd collide with the larger mirror of a Nikon or Canon camera.

The only film camera mount that lends itself readily to adapting other lenses is Canon's Eos. The Canon register is among the shortest and the throat diameter among the widest, allowing Nikon F mount and M42 lenses (among others) to be fitted while retaining infinity focus. Still no auto diaphram though.

If you have M42 lenses, then why not get an M42 body to use them on? It's not as if film cameras are expensive these days, and you can pick up a used Spotmatic or similar for peanuts. Probably for less than the cost of an adapter.
CvhKaar
The only positive experience i have with M42 lenses ( some of them) combined with Nikon (D)SLR's is as a macro lens on a pb4 bellows
bebu_lamar
I have one of those adapter. It has a piece of glass to correct for the infinity focusing problem. I never used it as such. I immediately break and remove the glass. Mount it on my Nikon bellow and mount my enlarging lens with 39mm screw mount with yet another adapter to 42mm. If anyone know of an adapter to mount the 39mm screw mount lens on the Nikon F mount let me know.
But as for the OP question. Don't do it. Why would you want to do it. The Pentax is superior to the Nikkor? The Nikkor is to expensive? besides it would be cheap and nice to buy a Pentax body to use the lens.
rodeo_joe1
BeBu, the bellows I use is an old Pentax unit. The back thread was made removable for ease of mounting and is easily replaced by a T2 adapter. So no problem getting it to fit a Nikon. I have a couple of home-made adapters to convert M42 to Leica 39mm, and another that adapts one and a half inch English enlarger thread lenses to M42. Macro lenses - who needs 'em?

A T2 adapter has a 42mm x 0.75mm thread, as opposed to the M42 x 1mm Pentax/Praktica thread. So if you get a 42x0.75mm to 39mm x 26TPI adapter made, you're sorted to use Leica screw lenses on a Nikon via a T mount. A company called SRB-Griturn specialises in adapters, and can make one or may even have an off-the-shelf adapter.

Edit: Just looked at SRB-Griturn's website and they do indeed supply an M39 to T2 insert. See this web page.
chet_creider
Thank you for your replies. I didn't think it would be possible, but wasn't sure b/c there was no discussion I could find about it on the internet. I have a Spotmatic and a K1000 with an M42 to K mount adapter for it, so the lens, which is very nice, gets exercised. However, for an upcoming trip I want to take only the F2 and have had trouble finding an affordable old Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 for it. I may just do without this time and wait patiently when I return for one I can afford ($100 or less).
william_y
I have used a couple of lens converters for M42 to other cameras (not Nikon) but I was not at all impressed with the fit and function. A couple of times it seemed as though I was not going to be able to get the adapter off of my camera or lens without damaging one or the other or both. Bottom line, I don't mess around with converters any more. Generally speaking, there doesn't seem to be a shortage of decent used lenses for manual focus cameras, and I have been able to find and purchase most anything I need often for less than the price of a lens converter.
john_narsuitus
I tried using Takumar and Fuji M42 screw-mount lenses on my Nikon bayonet-mount cameras but saw no advantage. The loss in automatic features and infinity focus was not worth the subtle difference in image quality.

The only time I found it beneficial to use M42 lenses on my Nikon mount cameras was when I was comparing lens performance.

<a href="
<a href="
<a href="
<a href="
