paulferesten
Is anyone planning to have Canon inspect their 5DIII for the light leak issue? Not clear to me whether this is worth sending the camera in for.
Is this really a non issue?
alan_bryant1
I tested my camera. The leak is real; in complete darkness the light meter was reading EV -3.7; when I turn on the LCD light it goes up to -3.0.

The meter is only rated to work down to EV 1, so technically I think it's within spec. EV -3 is around moonlight, or very dark interior, like a room lit by a few candles. Light meters and autofocus are not dependable in that kind of light, so realistically you'll be focusing and metering manually anyway.

I'm not planning on getting mine fixed.
dan_south
There's nothing wrong with my 5DIII.
peter_j2
Unconfirmed information that Canon has stopped shipment of the Canon EOS 5D Mark III in Canada and the UK.

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/Default.aspx?Cat=Canon-Service-Notices

Here's a video:

http://player.vimeo.com/video/39982919?title=0&byline=0&portrait=0&color=ffffff
danmarchant
Too busy using my camera to take photos. I have no intention of photographing the inside of my lens cap so it is not an issue.
keith reeder
The exact same "issue" exists in the 5D Mk II (and probably others) too, if you care to test - and you can tell from how little we've seen in the way of complaints about it in the Mk II, just how trivial it is.
alan_bryant1
I wondered if previous cameras had the issue. I tested my 5D mk I and 30D, and neither of them did it.
alan_bryant1
Roger at lensrentals.com now has access to pre- and post-fix 5D mark 3s, and has partially disassembled them to find the fix. It's very simple: A strip of opaque black tape.

http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2012/05/the-fix-is-in

peter_j2
That is too funny. It gives "Made in Japan" a new meaning in 2012!

pmind
Maybe it's not the same problem, but the old A-1 has a switch to turn off the internal display so it would not confuse the meter, I imagine other cameras do too.
stevejw
I'm having a little trouble finding info on whether metering is affected in manual mode in a normal low light situation.

Say for example I'm shooting a low light cityscape in manual mode and I have the top LCD lit, will that affect metering and therefore produce an underexposed image if I go by what the meter is telling me?

My guess is that it would since the shutter speed is being told what to do via the light meter in Aperture Priority mode.
Obviously you would have to either turn the LCD light off or adjust your shutter speed accordingly.

I don't really understand how this can be dismissed as a non issue if this is the case.
