lane_morgan
50 years ago my dad did a book about the Seattle World's Fair with Steven C. Wilson; I've recently gotten a request to republish it for the fair's 50th anniversary. I have the rights to the text but not Wilson's photos, and I trying to determine who now owns those rights. It would be a real shame to republish without the photos.
thanks,
Lane Morgan
MathewDH
Hi Lane,

A quick internet search shows it was published by Acme Press and distributed by the University of Washington Press.

Rod Olzendam was the owner of Acme. Here are his personal rememberances from 1996:

http://marketingimmortals.com/graphicArts.cfm?aId=72360BD2-C29B-57E0-8EEF77AEB7C8F641

Acme story and later mergers here:

http://marketingimmortals.com/graphicArts.cfm?aId=085D2725-C29B-57E0-8A7BE2E4CEA04CBD

The link below is for a photographer who mentored under the photographer Steven C. Wilson. See the mention at the bottom of the page. It looks like Steven Wilson is still alive. If so, this photographer may be able to put you in contact with Mr. Wilson. Between the University of Washington Press and Mr Wilson, it should be possible to figure who owns the rights. He may still have the original negatives which would be a great boon for reprinting the book.

http://www.agpix.com/photographer/prime/A0084250.html

CHEERS...Mathew
lane_morgan
Hi Matt,
Thanks for the thorough response. I appreciate the time you put into this. We seem to use the same search queries as I've been to all those sites. No joy so far. UW Press will check, but they don't have as complete records for books they only distributed. Olzendam is dead and Acme long out of business. I've written to Joel Rogers but not gotten a response yet. I also checked death records; not finding Wilson there gives me hope that he is still alive. Judging by the jacket photo he was maybe in his 30s at the time of the Fair.
I do know some veteran Seattle-area photographers, so I'll try that next.
thanks again,
Lane

MathewDH
Hi Lane,

I had also found an article in Pennisula Living with his photographs so I think is is around and active. I just never found a direct link to him like an official website.

I was eight when at the fair and all I remember was the Nalley's green pickle pin dispensor. Push a button and you got the pin. I pushed it too many times and the staff got annoyed with me.

Good luck on the search and getting the book republished.

CHEERS...Mathew
lane_morgan
Update: Getting closer to Steve Wilson....
Thanks for all info people of gathered. I really appreciate it. The photographer's grapevine is impressive. The link to a show on Bainbridge Island showed me that Wilson is still active and gave a gallery to contact, though they have not responded yet. Then I called Harald Sund. He hasn't heard from Wilson in years, but he thinks Dick Busher has, so he is getting in touch with Dick. So....we'll see what happens next.
Lane
