Scott,
Where was the photo taken? That will help us narrow the possibilities. I'd guess some species of egret or possibly a white heron. Also, I wasn't in your situation so it may not have been possible, but if I can't get close enough to the bird, then I can fill frame space by incorporating a reflection. If the reflection of the tree brach and bird was apparent in the water it may have compensated for a lack of intimacy. Nonetheless, still a great shot. I can't get enough bird photos.

I was down in central Florida, apparently, it is a juvenile Snowy Egret (so says the girlfriends Audubon app), that is why the legs are not yet dark. Here is a 100% crop. I tried for the reflection but couldn't back up with the prime lens enough without going off the path into the wetland, the photo certainly wasn't worth breaking the rules for. I did get some really close vulture images, but they have a habit of flying away from me, maybe I'm not dead yet!

Really great shots again this week, like all weeks. ///////////
I went out to Pea Island NWR this past weekend, but it's still dealing with issues as a result of Hurricane Irene, so waterfowl there was far and few between, and the weather was not the most cooperative.
I had to settle with a pic of Martini on the couch. For the first year and, a half we had her she kept her tounge in her mouth, now she just has gotten lazy or something as she's almost always got it out. We've learned to embrace it.

It seems that Old Man Winter may have a touch of Alzheimer's and has forgotten about Southern California. This was last week in Ventura when there was high surf. The day before the waves were about a foot high. The waves were not so good for traditional surfers but great for the Kite surfers.
Another week with lots of good pictures. I really like Doug Obert's shot of the ice on the tree.
I'm not quite ready to try bird in flight so I'm starting with bird in walk pictures. Actually this is the first great blue heron I have seen and I had my camera.
