Photo Labs N. California or South Oregon region

Recommended Posts

Can anyone recommend good 'affordable' photo labs in the Northen California or Southern Oregon region please? I may be visiting from the UK later in the year and will want to have 35mm and 120 color neg. and reversal films processed and scanned with a maximum 5 day turnaround.

I have been quoted prices of $28 (plus shipping) for unmounted E6+scan from a S.F. lab which I feel is somewhat outrageous for a 10 day turnaround - is this becoming the norm for the US?

The decline in slide film sales have been more precipitous in the US than Europe, so volumes at the labs are down, driving up costs and prices. Dip and dunk E-6 is closing in on $10 a roll without mounting.
You might want to consider North Coast Photographic Services, which are warmly recommended by Ken Rockwell. But they are in Southern California, so you'll need a stable postal address.

Thanks John - Ten bucks a roll would be fine, and I guess SoCal could be a possibility if the turnaround is fast. I'll be visiting a friend in southern OR for several weeks - it's a "stable" area (compared to S.F.) . . . But speaking as a lapsed geologist, a little 'instability' would be quite interesting . . . ;-)

If labs in the Los Angeles area are acceptable, try A&I (Alexander and Ishihara): http://aandi.com/fp.html

They are well known, but since I haven't shot film in several years, I haven't dealt with them lately. And unless you ship FedEx overnight, a 5-day turn around between Oregon and LA is optimistic.

The only lab I am aware of in San Francisco that does E6 processing charges less than $10 a 35mm roll uncut. I don't have them scan it. They normally turn processing around on the same or next day depending on when it's dropped off.
But lately I've been leery of handing them any critical color work, too much of it has come back dirty and a bit scratched up. I have enough trouble shooting 35mm film as it is, I don't need any more challenges on top of that.
Of course years ago when I tied A&I, I wasn't too fond of their service quality either ...

According to webwisdom it seems like Lightwaves Imaging gets the vote, though I'm no fan of dirty and scratched films. However, I may just bring the films back to the UK for processing. O tempora, O mores!
