Homeland security Harassing you?

Recommended Posts

Are you getting harassing treatment because you wear a suspicious looking vest with lots of bulging pockets and taking pictures? If you wear one of these you will be instantly identified as a professional photographer, and be completely left to take photos at your leisure!

00YU8X-343763584.JPG.058a10a6e8cab4917d9f29d3204d0b2f.JPG

Returning from a recent trip to Arizona I went through a body search because something in my camera bag tripped an alarm. I didn't give a damn as the twenty something guy felt me up. My wife couldn't watch the procedure for fear of laughing out loud.
I volunteered to assist the inspectors should they wish to look through my camera bag. They declined. I don't believe they were sufficiently trained to cope with the stuff I was carrying. I carried my exposed film in a carry on bag and I asked if it could be hand inspected.
I don't believe the inspectors had ever seen 120 film before and they called their supervisor. The supervisor was about 28 and asked if my film was "over 800." I was tempted to say "over 800 what ?" but I didn't.
Some of the rolls of film were unopened and sealed in foil of course. I relented and told them to x-ray the damn things so I could go to bed.
The entire episode took about ten minutes and I came away with the feeling that I could have hidden something had I wanted to. I'm the last man on Earth that would want to do such a thing.

There are some cameras that you probably don't want to carry around in the airport, or on many other places that don't have open carry:
Try http://www.oobject.com/category/14-cameras-that-look-just-like-guns/ for older cameras. And still more at http://gajitz.com/point-and-shoot-5-more-weird-gun-shaped-cameras/

This one is cute too:

Bush? Elected in 2000? Nope. Appointed, yes, due to issues with the Florida ballot system. The system is seriously flawed. Don't you find it odd that baby brother Jeb Bush was governor of Florida at the time?

As for Dubya, calling him a village idiot would be a promotion of several pay grades.

I wonder what books the G.W. Bush presidential library will contain...See Spot Run? Nice Little Ducky?

When one of the Comedy Channel's fake news programs asked crowd members whether Obama was a "Keynesian," many were outraged that his US citizenship was either established or not established.

I will grant that Dubya was sort of elected in 2000. It may be of historical interest that in the election, he got 100% of the Black vote (Justice Thomas voted for him in the only election that counted).

I'm really sorry that Al Gore wasn't able to steal the election in 1999 as he tried so hard to do. Even tough he had already given his concession speach, his advisers saw a legal loop hole and thought just maybe they could pull off a scam and give Gore the Presidency even though they all knew he hadn't won it. Several recounts have proven that Bush won the popular vote but, lets say just for your amusement that he didn't win. What about GWB's second term. If people thought him to be such an idiot, why was he so handily re-elected. The truth is, his popularity never dropped to the levels of the current President until 2005, well over a year into his second term. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/6038436.stm
And why is this being discussed here instead of in the OT forum where it would be so much more welcome.

Amen .. One does get harassed using cameras in public places. I saw a gut with a Digi P&S being shooed away from the front of the unemployment office. The funny thing was he wanted to photograph the cool architecture of the opposite building and was doing it from the front and the security people were fighting with him. I would've gone to the public sidewalk and photographed them and the Welfare Building and see if they'd call the police!! On their property they can tell you no, on the sidewalk they can't. But I think for what he wanted, the sidewalk was too close and it (the opposite building) wouldn't fit in the frame. Go figure!

Thanks for the correction Marc. Of course I meant 2000. I meant Even though instead of "Even tough" as well.

I don't think any of us can change the past (yes I was puzzled, as were many people around the world, when Bush won a 2nd term), but regardless I still want one of those contraptions in the original post.

Seriously, about the whole security thing and paranoia about photography, which I'm sure we've all experienced, I've been tempted (large hairy 6ft man) to don the niqab (or better, the Afghan 'beehive' suit) myself, with a camera underneath, and photograph peoples' reaction. But here in Montreal I don't think I would get much of any except a few glances at my shapely hips. I should try it in Omaha. Except I don't really want to go to Omaha.
