Must be bald eagle week here at the Canon POW:

My wife and I accompanied our local Audubon group on the monthly bird watching hike on Saturday. We all were just getting out of our cars and starting to walk down a long fishing pier to look at shorebirds. Suddenly we saw a resident eagle swooping in progressively lower sweeps until we realized that it was aiming to snatch a bufflehead that was quite close to us. At the very last moment, the bufflehead dove under the water just beyond the clasp of the eagle's talons. The eagle then realized how close it was to humans and took off.

Photographically, capturing the decisive moment was not possible due to both the bad luck of my getting to the scene (and getting the camera settings changed over from a more stable environment of our prior stop--one shot etc) a little too late, and my skills (or lack thereof) at following that fast action instantly. The group leader, an ornithology authority who manages a natural history museum, noted how quickly the eagle's movements speeded up when diving for the bufflehead.

Anyway, it was a memorable experience.

Well there is certainly a bit of great stuff this week; Nathan, Lupo, Brad, Jim, G.K., and Louis's works do stick in the mind. But John's cat Wally, he is too much, an adorable capture. My entry this week is fairly old because I have been inundated on any clear day we have had here on the ranch recently. I shot this flower the summer before last practicing with my mostly new at that time EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro. Perhaps not the best of rose specimens, but seemed picturesque at the time.

00XruZ-312055584.jpg.b2cd12cef07a30ab26e223c6a612bf8a.jpg

Trying to decide what post-processing would give the best print -- this is the light (less processed) version...

...but am wondering whether the high contrast one isn't visually stronger / has more "punch" to it (?)
It's meant to be my Xmas present for the model :)

I really like these postings. I hope to catch on as a regular that way I can try to keep my "focus". I had one outing this week and this is a shot from the day. I was with a good friend at a local Buddhist community center when he was giving a demonstration on portrature to a childrens group. I got photographs of the photographs.

00XsCs-312357584.jpg.8e388b772bc8c66dc972ee55dc2f8234.jpg
