Cleaning my Nikon FG-20

Recommended Posts

Having owned many SLR's these past 40 years, I only clean the outside eye piece. Trying to clean the underside of the viewing screen can dislodge old beginning to rot foam light seal which may end up on the screen, the shutter, the fragile front surface mirror(also do not clean mirror) or anywhere where it shouldn't go. That 'goop' is almost impossible to clean unless you are experienced in those types of repairs. IMHO ignore the dust particles they don't show up on the film.

Take it to a qualified repair tech. ;-)

Seriously. The focusing screen on the FG-20 is not intended to be "user serviceable" or interchangeable, although it is not difficult to remove *if* you know exactly what you are doing (reinstalling it is a bit trickier). And it does need to be removed for a successful cleaning. There may also be dirt under the focusing screen between the screen and prism. But if you need to ask how, then you probably should not attempt a cleaning.

The reflex mirror can be successfully cleaned of even stuck on foam goop without damaging the somewhat fragile front silvering (it's not *that* delicate). But again, you have to know *exactly* what you are doing or the only result is going to be scratches or an even dirtier mirror.

As Paul noted, none of these issues make any difference whatsoever as to what is captured on film. Ignore it and shoot some pictures.
