The display has a much (noticeably) better look to it with the Giottos than with the OEM plastic cover (which I used originally and then and replaced it with the Giottos). It is easily removable if you want to take it off but cannot be removed more than one or two times before it looses its tackiness.

There is not now, nor has there ever been, an OEM plastic(or glass) LCD cover for Nikon D3, D3s, or D3x. The $18,95 Hoodman plastic product is inferior, imo, to the Nikon OEM covers for the D700, D2X, etc. It's not as flat as the OEM covers.

I have some extremely good invisible shields for D300 and D700 from Zagg, and they also make for D3x
but a little difficult/cumbersome to install

None of the D3 family DSLRs comes with a cover for the back LCD. Their LCD is supposed to use tempered glass. When Bjorn Rorslett tested the D3, he reported that he tried to use a knife to scratch it. I am not sure how hard he tried, but apparently there was no damage. I also tried something similar and I too find that the D3's LCD glass is quite strong.

See Bjorn's report: http://www.naturfotograf.com/D3/D3_rev01.html

Is an LCD cover really necessary?
