ShunCheung
The D5000 uses a panta-mirror viewfinder. It is similar in quality as the D40, D60, and D3000. I would say it is not the best for manual focusing. However, the D5000 has the live view option. If you are willing to use it on a tripod, live view can give you very accurate manual focusing.

steven_p
Like Shun mentioned, the viewfinder isn't the greatest, but...

it has a feature called electronic range finder, which I find to be much more accurate than the simple focus dot on the more expensive cameras.
andylynn
There is a focus LED and... somebody who has one?... probably the LED arrows telling you which direction you're off in. Never tried manual focus on a D5000 but a D60 has that.
arnulfo_rosas1
Unless you have a 20/20 eyesight, forget the D5000 as you will have to work at slow pace. Viewfinder like the D2 & D3 series combined with microprism focusing screens are the only ones that let you use your MF lenses with ease.
wmervine
I have a D5000, and the autofocus system does give you a indicator of focus. Uses the exposure bar graph indicator.
But then, don't know if it will work with manual focus lenses, as I don't have any to compare.
Trying to remember how the system works. Autofocus motor is in the lenses, but the focussing is in the body. So the focus assist should work, correct?
