bellavance
I'm looking for a reasonably priced (I'd say under $500) 24" monitor with 1920x1200 resolution for my new computer. Usage will include Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom. Any suggestions?
Thanks.
w_t1
go to newegg.com and search for "t240hd", i bought about a year ago, price is half of what i paid, last i checked it was $249 with free shipping. I think B&H has similar deal if you're on east coast.

you can read the reviews there, I'm 100% satisfied, coming from a 20" samsung computer monitor, I also use as a tv tuner, hdmi input, et c

sheldonnalos
You want an IPS panel. The Dell U2410 would be at the top of my list.
KenPapai
Dell U2410 ($750) is panned by a few for some banding issues (esp. concerning hardcore photo editors like us) in greys, blacks, & browns. Deal killer?
bellavance
Thanks to all.
I'll look into the t240hd.
What is IPS?
Dell U2410 is a little expensive...
peteraitch
IPS=In-Plane Switching. This is the best LCD display technology, with the worst (Twisted Nematic - TN) being the "everyday" monitor choice. Leaving aside middle-of-the road VA (vertical alignment) technology, the better the technology the better your blacks, colour fidelity (once calibrated), contrast, angle of view and long-term stability. Downside is, obviously, cost and also response time (important if you play games, as it will tend to introduce motion blur).

Do a web search for IPS monitors - you'll get the usual suspects (like NEC), the rebadged bargains (like Dell) and the high-end stuff (like Eizo).
martin_howard1
Take a look at the HP LP2475w - 24" H-IPS Panel
Also the 22" Dell 2209wa - E-IPS panel
TN panels don't really cut the mustard for photo editing.

paul_ong1
Sorry about diverting the thread a little, but I just bought a Dell U2410 based on some positive reviews. I did not hear about banding issues. Steve and others, can you give me some details? So far, I have not encountered any problems. Thanks.

bellavance
NEC's EA241WM-BK 1920 x 1200 24" Monitor has a somewhat reasonable price. Is it any good?
gintautas_rugienius
Samsung 2494SW is a nice TN screen. Picked one up for BestBuy for $199.99 a few weeks ago.
bellavance
IPS Panels are a little expensive.
I'm thinking of buying the el Cheapo Samsung 2443BW HAS and if I don't like it, I can sell it in 24 hours. Does anyone have this screen?
bellavance
For years, I've been using a Samsung 193P 19 inch screen that's given me full satisfaction.
After a lot of Googling, I've found it's a PVA panel.
Is this closer to TN or IPS in terms of quality?
bellavance
I've also found out that newer TN panels can show 16.7 million colors, while older panels couldn't.
bellavance
Finally, I think I'll go for the Dell U2410 when it's debugged.
Thanks to all.
kari v
PVA sits between TN and IPS. Anything is better than TN.
Dell looks like a reasonable choice.
patricklavoie
if you have been happy with a Samsung PVA monitor..anything out there will do the job just fine now. ; )

if you want the best for your money, go with a NEC P221, a 22 inch.. will be your first real monitor for photo editing at the price range your ask.
bellavance
NEC's P221 is nice, but I'd really want to have 1920 x 1200 resolution, so I'm really looking for a 24 inch or 25.5 inch monitor.
patricklavoie
so you prefer size over quality? OK, then the Dell U2410 is a compromise between the 2. To expensive? back to square one; anything you will find under 500$, that have 24inch and 1920x1200 should do then ; )
bellavance
I've determined that I will have to go for size AND quality, and I'm therefore prepared to stretch my budget accordingly.
I'm effectively quite tempted by the Dell U2410, but I'm waiting for version A01 to become available.

x
The HP LP2475W is an excellent choice but when I looked around various retailers here in the UK on behalf of a friend I couldn't find one. It may have been discontinued and unfortunately I'm not aware of a replacement from HP.
bellavance
I think I'll go for the Dell U2410. From reviews I've read, it seems marginally better than the HP LP2475W but I'll have to wait for the newer A01 version of the U2410 to become available before ordering one, unless I find an even better (or as good but cheaper) 24" or 25.5" model meanwhile...
