rob_gruber
The NY Times today (8/18) has a magazine section "Fashions of the Times". The cover has this great black and white photo which had nice very pointilist style grain. Was wondering if anyone could speculate on the film that produces this kind of effect. It's a very round and regular type of grain, I guess it could be some sort of digital effect as well.
art_haykin
Digital, perhaps, but we used to use grain and texture screens and negs that came in all manner of grain sizes and shapes, as well as linen and other weaves, sand, crosshatch lines, wavy lines....you name it. Also, it's not to difficult to make your own.
m0002a
This question pops up so frequently that I would suggest that a separate forum be started to discuss this subject. I am dead serious.
rob_gruber
If discussions of grain bother you, why not just ignore them? A seperate forum seems ridiculous. Grain is certainly one of the primary characteristics of black and white film and is influenced greatly by development and seems entirly appropriate to this forum. I'm not interested particularly in say Ilford Delta films so I don't read threads relating to them.
m0002a
No, they don't bother me at all, but people frequently ask how to increase grain in their negatives. It is a shame that there is not some comprehensive resource that is available to share ideas on this subject. I just think that the volume of these inquiries justifies its own forum, and it would make the dissemination of information more efficient. I would probably leave the discussion about decreasing grain in this forum.
bob haight
The more you push the film, the more grain you get.
