eric_arnold
the set-up: picking up on the men at work theme but with a twist: urban themes with industrial elements or vice-versa. still lifes ok.

the story: I came upon a bunch of industrial equipment parked outside Divisadero street on a rainy night in San francisco. of course i had to shoot it with the sigma 30/1.4, an excellent lens for street, btw.

the blurb: to me there is a certain noirish/gothic expressionism (or is that post-noirish?) in the juxtaposition of urban and industrial elements. what do you think?

jonathan_reynolds
Sorry, Eric, I mistook this for a W/NW thread. I agree about the Gothic in your first shot. The others don't have it for me, but hopefully mine above has a Victorian Gothic feel.
leighmcmullen
@eric, I liked the last one Urban Industrial 4... it think the near split toning of the image adds greater depth than BW alone. it's very very easy for regular BW images to go 2D. Where capturing a gothic mood, you need a bit of color or light to offset and make the shadows more dark than black by comparison giving the image greater scale...
I'm probably not explaining my thoughts very well (hungover)... I like number four.

eike.welk
Great images! Especially David's "Steamy" image gets me. Phylo, your first image reminds me of the illustrations in the book "In the Night Kitchen" by Maurice Sendak.
eric_arnold
stepped away from this thread for a minute and when i came back there were all kinds of variations on the theme = fantastic!
elmo and philip nailed it, i thought, but i also very much like phylo's last two shots, which were sorta "metropolis"-esque--that grain is gravy.

also the juxtaposition of david and pnina's shots, which are kind of industrial landscapes.

here's another shot from the same sequence...
