Pigment-based fine art printer.

I just met an artist that takes jpegs and puts them through photoshop to make them look like they are a painting and

prints them out with a "pigment-based fine art printer." Has anyone ever heard of these types of printers. The photos

look just like a painting with raised ink.

The top of the line Canon, Epson, and HP inkjet printers all use pigment based inks. There are other

manufacturers as well in the market but they aim at what I call "art by the square yard" markets. it is a very

big business.

As far as the raised ink is concerned, there is an acrylic gel that you can apply to a print to mimick brush strokes, but the inks in those

pigment printers don't have any depth.

Thanks for the answers. His pictures have raised ink. I didn't think it was the printer. I just wasn't sure how he did that. Maybe he is putting acrylic gel over them. Again, sorry if this is the wrong area for the thread.

Maybe post to the Epson Yahoo group. There are people running some strange inks through printers and there was recently a discussion about it there I believe.

What you want is usually called gel medium. There are a number of manufacturers and different types of finish for gel mediums.
