A photographer you admire

Recommended Posts

Just re-discovered my copy of Saul Leiter's 'Early Color' in the bookshelf. Bought back in July 2006 and now selling for outrageous money on both sides of the Atlantic....

Cost me 23 GB pounds. Wish I had bought a few copies back then!

Andrew Lamb would like to thank Trevor Hare for recommending 'An English Eye' by James

Ravilious.

As for Leiter, I must admit I definitely prefer 'Early Color' to his latest book. Insane prices for

the former. Incidentally, Leiter currently has an exhibition at the HCB Foundation in Paris.

Elliot Erwitt for his wit.

Jay Maisel for the way he uses color framing and composition, for his sense of light, and the way he finds the right instant to snap, for his tremendous rigorous editing skills (by editing I do not mean Photoshop manipulation skills -- I mean vigorously and unsparingly paring away the bad photos to find the pearl, for his inventiveness, for his willingness not to follow conventions and rules and think for himself, and most profoundly for his teaching ability and generosity of spirit. http://www.jaymaisel.com

Gregory Heisler for his use of light and the way he brings out a sitter's personality, his good humor and his ability to teach. http://www.gregoryheisler.com

James Nachtwey, Lauren Greenfield, Antonin Kratochvil (all members of htpp://www.VIIPhoto.com ), Eugene Richards, Lori Grinker, and Jodi Cobb for their unflinching ability to look at humans and human societies both sympathetically and deeply.

the more I look at photographs and photographer's work - the more I ask myself the question - is it the photographer or is it the nostalgia/interest/viewpoint that competence delivers from an interesting scene..

I cant get my mind around the fact that being there ( wherever 'there' is ) is 90% of the outcome. The energy required to be there is not a resource I can draw upon for personal shooting much anymore..

So I guess I am very grateful for the absolute boom in photographic images and opening up of talent on show via the internet.

I have no doubt that the next big thing will be hybrid/still/moving image presentations in multi media set-ups..

I have been very impressed with a couple of the early presentations put together by Brad, Ed and Maria.

have to get my act together and learn how to do this ...
