bobatkins
Here's an interesting quote from the Canon Austraila website: "...The Canon EOS 40D will be available in Body Only (RRP $1,999.00) and as a kit with EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens (RRP $2,799.00). These kits and accessories are all available from August 25th, 2007 through Canon dealers nationally. For more information customers can contact Canon on 1800 021 167..." Looks like they get the 17-85 as a kit lens. Makes more sense than a 28-135. I guess the boat must take another few weeks to get to the US? Must be a slow-boat indeed. It supposed to sell in the states for 1,299 body only, according to legitimate sources, but who knows. I'm guessing it should also come with the a new version of DPP(one that can read 14 bits).
yakim_peled1
Could it be related to the fact that Australia is closer to Japan than America? :-) Happy shooting, Yakim.

zigzag
Australia (Gold Coast) is a Japanese Fiefdom. Meanwhile, the Nikon D3 is coming too: Monday, August 20th, 2007 (Tokyo) ? Nikon Corp. of japan this morning unveiled their newest digital SLR targeted toward professionals, the Nikon D3. But while Nikon maintains that the D3 is a groundbreaking development in the world of digital imaging, photographers and analysts alike seem to be scratching their heads. "It's a brick, a frickin' brick," said an obviously agitated Tommy Hogan, professional photographer. "Yes, it's a brick," admitted Nikon President, CEO and COO Michio Kariya. "However, research showed us that we were rapidly losing market share in the professional realm to Canon. Here at Nikon, we're not so prideful that we refuse to admit when we're wrong. If photographers want a camera like Canon offers, we'll build a camera like Canon offers. In this case, the brick was the closest we could come to achieving the ergonomics found in Canon's 5D." eric_lawson1
Cost difference is due to the exchange rate in Australia.

kurt petersen
Not just exchange rate. I'm not sure if it's taxes or "market forces" but you pay a great deal more equivalent dollar value for camera and electronic gear in AU compared to USA or HKG. steve_dunn2
One thing I noticed in the Canon U.S. press release was that both of the new bodies have not yet received FCC approval and can't be sold in the U.S. until they get it. Perhaps this explains part of the delay.

pgranone
At that price the 5D looks like a better way to spend money. It is not much more expensive.
dave_lewis
Speaking of slow boats... does anyone have any idea how long it will take B&H before it will have a pre-order option for the 40D? Cheers, Dave.
daniel_smith6
Type I or II CF card * Compatible with Microdrive and 2GB and larger CF cards The above is from the Canon site. Does this mean the 40D will only use CF cards of 2 Gigabyte and larger?
yakim_peled1
>> AU prices are a rort One of the great things about this site is that I learn English as much as I learn about photography.... :-) Happy shooting, Yakim.

JeffOwen
Hey Mike, how did you get the UK ? (pound) sign to work? This is the first time I have seen it on this forum. If the 40D is ?900 when it arrives in the UK I might well swap it for my 20D.
