Peeling Film Emusion

Recommended Posts

I souped a roll of Tri-X 400 on friday and after I squeegeeed them I noticed

that some film emulsion was peeling from around the sproket holes. I didnt put

them in hypoclear or any photoflo, could this be the error in my ways? Has

anyone else had this happen? I didnt have a loupe to inspect the images and the

images are in the drying cabinet at school right now so I cant really look at

them. Would my images be at risk?

First of all, why are you using a squeegee? Those things are teh devil's own handiwork. A quick dunk in Photoflo, or any other comparable wetting agent is all you need to insure spot free drying.

Old Tri-X (pre 2002) had a softer emulsion than the newer stuff. One could scratch the wet emulsion off the support with a fingernail. That's not as easily done now. I'm pretty sure that excess heat had something to do with your problem. Without more information, my best guess is that the was water was too warm.

I don't think temperature has much to do with it. Here in Miami, FL I've been developing at tap water temerature, which can get up to 84 in the summer, and I've been doing that since 1961, which means a lot of generations of Tri-X with "New Improved" on the box. I used hardening fixer, hypo clearing agent, wash and then Photoflo. I never use a squeegee and I've never had a problem.
