Agfa APX 100 @ 400

Recommended Posts

I want to buy some Agfa APX 100 and shoot it at 400. I will develop it in 1:1

D-76 solution, because I dont have anything else. Anyone have any experience

with this? Any adverse effects of shooting it at 400? Or should the noticable

grain be the same as Agfa APX 400?

Neither film is very good for pushing. if you are after an artictic effect where contrast and grain are very high and shadow detail is very low then what you are contemplating should work. If you want more normal results then just get some 400 speed film and shoot that at 400. The grain with either 100 speed film, when it is pushed to 400, will be much worse than starting out with a good film which is rated at 400 to begin with. Agfa APX 400 is not a terribly fine grained 400 speed film. Tri-X, HP5+, Neopan 400 [Presto], Delta 400 and Kodak TMY all have finer grain. The problem is not with the D-76 but with the pushing.

I don't know what the point of shooting a 100 speed film at 400 is if you are just looking to duplicate the look of a film often exposed at 1600. Tri-X or Neopan 400 exposed at 400 will have better shadow detail, finer grain and better controlled highlights.

There is alot of fresh date APX 400 in 100 feet reels on ebay Ultrafine has them as do others. Infact there is a ton of it out there plus +++++

I loved the gritty feel of the 400 but it could also be smooth depending on how I processed it. the 100 will not push more than 1 stop worth a dookie and that is in Diafine... I shoot it at 200-250 in Diafine and it is great the 400 in Diafine was 800-1000. In Acufine I got about 200-250 out of it and then it looked like 400 at 320-400.

I recently got my hands on alot of Tri-X so Even my HP5+ is sitting in the freezer.
