db1
Does anyone know when the new "classic" lenses will be available in the USA?
leicaglow
... to add to this, I heard that Zeiss will directly sell their own version of the lenses for the Hasselblad. Do we know when that will be as well?
leicaglow
David, A little off topic, but I really enjoyed your website. Were the New Orleans photos taken with an Xpan? They are brilliantly sharp.
leicaglow
Oops, should have read your "Process" section for the answer<g>.
arthur_gottschalk
I for one would love to know what "new lenses" you're talking about. I don't see anything about this on Hassie's website.
ken_wayne1
The new lenses can be seen here: site They are making the f/4 50mm, 120mm, and 180mm ZV and here is what they look like:

blessings, Ken
paul_neuthaler
Why would someone want these instead of readily available -- "Bargain" to "Mint" -- Zeiss originals in C, CF, CFI or CFE versions?
leicaglow
Arthur, I don't want to speak for David, but I think we're talking about the same lenses: http://www.zeiss.com/photo.
john_layton
I'm wondering about the 50mm - according to the website, the performance is stellar. Must be a redesign. No indications of floating elements though - so I wonder whats up with this?
db1
Why do I want these? First, I like having the latest and greatest. Second, these lenses are simply sexy. Third, I am in the market for a few new lenses. And lastly, just because. thanks for posting the images and thanks to you Michael for the compliments on the NOLA work. And yes I used a Xpan II with 45mm lens. I think the film was APX 100.
q.g._de_bakker
I believe it has been on Photo.net before, but here's what these things are:

- All three lenses are the equivalent of the CF versions.
- The 50 mm Distagon is the FLE version, but indeed without the FLE mechanism. Zeiss say we don't use it properly anyway (they don't know), so we don't need it (patronizing? Well, yes indeed!). What they mean is they wanted to make these things cheaper, yet sell them for more.
- The 120 and 180 mm lenses are the same as the CF versions.
- The barrel too is like the CF version, but all in shiny metal (even the grip surface). And without the CF's shutter F-Mode.
- These are Zeiss products (not Hasselblad), sold by Zeiss (not Hasselblad).
- They hope to lure collectors (especially from Japan) who like (= buy whenever possible, for too much money) the 50s and 60s 'chrome' look of the old C lenses. q.g._de_bakker
Oh, and...

- No coupling between aperture and shutter speed rings
- A screw mount for filters (so you can but a new set of filters).
tariq_gibran
Just out of curiousity and given that Zeiss are subcontracting out many of their ZF and ZM lenses to Cosina in Japan, does anyone know if these are made by Zeiss in Germany OR if they are made in Japan? db1
okay....so are these available yet and if so, where? I've emailed zeiss but have not gotten an answer yet.
leicaglow
If you need new, reliable lenses, that's why you'd buy them, especially if relying on them for commercial work. Also, in the past there seems to have been some question about whether Hasselblad was going to continue stocking V system lenses. This would provide a solution to that problem by allowing you to buy them direct. What I find funny is that Hasselblad chrome lenses sell for much less than the black, but the new ZV lenses are chrome as well.

db1
So for us in the USA, that is about $4500 for each lens. I had figured on about 1/2 that. Oh well. I guess it's ebay time.
ken_wayne1
Would anyone care to speculate on the "cost" per lens for Zeiss to manufacture those lenses? I don't know much about their manufacturing process but $4500 for those lenses seem a bit.........ummmmmmmmm...........insane. But if someone can explain why they might be worth that much then I'm all ears. blessings, Ken
tariq_gibran
Speculation only but here it goes. Once current inventories of all new Hasselblad Zeiss lenses are gone, then these Zeiss lenses will be the only way to buy New. I also don't think that Hasselblad has officially stated the discontinuation of the V system. I think they will do that very soon. Also, this "classic" series will most likely be of much lower production numbers than any of the Hasselblad equivelents making them instant collector items. I suggest that the real deals right now if your looking to buy a New lens, and not a used one, would be to grab a current Hasselblad lens before they are gone.
