kengrooms
How much profit do camera stores make selling film? What's the mark up? Is it the same % for 35mm and sheet film? Thanks.
art_haykin
Film is a staple for the retailer, and generally speaking, repeat GENERALLY speaking, mark ups are around 40 percent, though will vary widely. The more competitive a product, the more the price will vary. Along with my lab and shooting. I had a small photo retailing business for over 30 years, and I sold my share of film....ALL kinds, but never relied on film sales as a big money maker. For me, the real money was in shooting and custom lab work.
Jochen_S
I doubt it to be the same percentage. Some local store used to give you a roll of 35mm color cheapo for free, if you had your stuff processed there. A average store has some hassle ordering the random pack of sheet film, so I'm quite sure the mark up will be higher than on 35mm CN, which is also sold at the supermarkets. In my hometown I'd have to kiss the feet of whoever is willing to order sheet film at all. - Most shops claim they can't.
