keirst
Well Brad, I'm glad you and your friends have not had any problems with authorities. You are right, I should not have said, "a lot of cops, security guards and transit workers..." when only a few are to blame and most are OK. I think it's naive, however, to think that if only you have the right attitude, you will be protected. Sometimes you just wind up pointing your lens at something in the wrong place at the wrong time. It only takes one cowboy to ruin your day. In Boston I was not harassed in for 15 years, until after 9/11, but afterward four times since the start of 2004. Fortunately I've never had my freedom truly violated, but the following links show some people were not so lucky, and had serious problems:

1) Man arrested for photographing refinery from sidewalk.
2) Railfan passenger arrested in New Orleans.
3) Street photographer assaulted by security guard on Hollywood Boulevard.
4) Doctor detained at police station for taking photo of power lines.
5) ACLU sues NYC for detaining Indian Filmmaker and wrecking his videocamera.

These are just five egregious cases from the past couple of years; there are many more. I wish these events were more rare.

Brad_
I think it's naive, however, to think that if only you have the right attitude, ...
Ha! Hardly naive, just common sense and adapting to situations - perhaps you are not adept at that. As I said, if you're prone to acting rude at the slightest provocation, sp is probably not for you. In the end, it does depend on your attitude. Feel free to worry about such things if you want. No serious shooter I know does.
You list 5 occurrences (and why did you list #1 as an arrest?). How about relating that to the millions of times people are out shooting and NOTHING happens. Does photopermit.org keep those statistics as well to keep things in proper perspective?
Question: If a cop sees something suspicious, should he be able to ask some questions? You said you've been harassed 4 times in the last two years. But your freedom was not truly violated. Well, what happened? Did a cop have the nerve to ask you some questions? www.citysnaps.net
