under-exposing c41 (400uc & konica 1600) - one more time

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I know, I know - the vast majority of c41 negative films have enough

latitude to give very usable results even when underexposed by a stop.

Grainier, yes, but usable.

However, I have a few rolls of 400UC and Konican 1600 that I was

forced to underexpose by about a stop while on a trip to Paris. Since

these pictures are quite important, I thought I'd ask here first if I

should get them pushed during processing.

thanks,

allan

My advice would be to develop normally if you only underexposed by one stop. You can push C41 but the films you used are not known for their fidelity when pushed. You would considerably heighten the contrast by pushing and this may mean you loosing detail that may have been retained by one stop of underexposure. You will know if the conditions at the taking stage were low or high contrast lighting, this may affect your decision. You could just give them an extra 15 seconds in the soup to increase the density a little!

We know that 400UC pushes well, one stop overexposed and developed

push2 for ~5 minutes -- people have done it. Unless R.T. Dowling

or somebody has tried it, nobody on this forum knows how Konica 1600

pushes. I recommend having the 400UC push processed at A&I, Calypso,

or a lab you know. You'll get better shadow detail.
