aeiffel
Hi,

I'd like to push some rolls of tri-x to 3200. I already have somestarting points for dev times, but I'm totally ignorant on the bestxtol dilution to use for such a 3 stops push. I usually stick to 1:1for 400 and 800, and rely on Diafine for the 1600 range.
I really don't know what to expect in terms of grain, sharpness andtonality, and how dilution might affect them. I'd really appreciateyou share your experience.

Thanks in advance, and happy newyear to all.
Fred
janne1
Imo, trix with xtol is about the "best" generic developer forscanning etc. Highlights dont block as easily than some other devs. And even pushed it looks good enough for most things. alexis_neel
But use it straight, not 1:1, especially for the push. You could also use some Excel, from the Formulary, to help with the push, and also the grain. Alexis www.alexisneel.com
frank.schifano
All due respect Alexis. I don't normally push Tri-X unless I plan to use Diafine with it. Then I rate it at anywhere from 1250 to 1600 depending on the quality, more than the quantity of the available light. My experience pushing an ISO 400 film, most often TMY in my case, 1 or two stops has shown that dilute XTOL, even at 1+3, works just as well as stock. Development times run around 17 minutes for this combination. That a long time and might account for some folk's reluctance to use this combination. Of course there is the temptation to not use enough developer this way, and one should be careful to maintain at least 100ml. of stock solution for each roll of film developed. aeiffel
My experience with solvent developer is pretty limited. However I guess grain, sharpness and shadow development increase with higher dilutions too ?
I think I'll try one in stock and another at 1:2, each might suit different needs. david11
Fred, I have no experience with pushing Tri-X to such speeds, but you might want to check out this previous posting on this forum: http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00C0U2
