What's in DiXactol?

I read an earlier post that stated that DiXactol has pyrocatechin and glycin in it. Does anyone have a package of it that says what the ingredients are? Sandy King sent me a formula that contains pyrocatechin only that was published by Barry Thornton in the March 1996 issue of Professional Photographer. I'm wondering if this might be the formula for DiXactol? Does anyone know?

Ed,

It seems to me that Barry Thornton, the manufacurer of DiXactol

doesn't want to make the exact formula public, for obvious reasons.

All I could find on his website (http://website.lineone.net/~barry-

thornton/dixactol.htm) about it was that it contains pyrocatchin and

glycin. Take alook. Maybe if you contact him directly you might have

some luck. Regards, ;^D)

Hello Ed,

I think I read it would use KOH or NaOH as accelerater. Since bath B

will change colour, it migth not include any sulfite. Ask for a

Material safety data sheet (MSDS). Too bad it comes as a liquid so

some amounts are too small to require listing.

Could you send me the formula by Email?

Shouldnt be too hard to figure out. Take the MSDS and see the

chemicals it lists, and the number of unnamed ones in minute

quantities. Compare with the 96 article, and see if there are any

that arent listed in either place, or if the total number matches up

or not. That should get you pretty close, and deduction (ah-ha!!) and

testing should get you even closer. I love a good developer mystery!

is it patented? patent literature will also help a lot
