glen_h
I have the Mercury II, which is much closer to square than to half frame. I even got a roll through the Pakon F135 scanner, where you adjust the framing parameters so it can find the frames. -- glen

JDMvW
A number of medium format film cameras came with masks to covert 120-film to 4.5x6 from 6xs. It would be simple to make such a mask (careful of scratching film of course) for a 24x36 format, but you sure don't want to mess with film advance on 35mm film. rossb
I wonder who decided on 4x6 to start with. But I am stuck with it since that is what my cameras shoot and that is the size that fits every photo album I have ever owned. But still I wish I owned a 6x6 and a high quality scanner for it. Richard Williams
An easy alternative would be to just add some square frame lines to your viewfinder as a compositional aid.Did any 35mm cameras offer this out of the box, or in the standard range of accessories? Square cropping grid lines used to be an option with the (now discontinued) KatzEye SLR focusing screens: http://www.katzeyeoptics.com/page--Grid-Lines-Crop-Guides--gridlines.html
