Leitz / Rokkor 40mm F/2.0 Summicron vs CV Nokton 40mm F/ 1.4

Recommended Posts

I haven't seen any photos made with the Nokton but I was playing with one just yesterday. The focus lacks the buttery smoothness of my 40mm Summicron-C and the diaphragm ring feels a bit "jumpy" as it hits the click stops. It sure is a pretty looking lens though!

One lens has 1.4 max aperture while the other has a 2.0. Obviously, wide open, the Nokton is more suitable for cases when you need a lens faster than 2.0. I like using the Summicron C lens. It is small and very sharp. For low light photography I prefer my Canon 50/1.2L and 85/1.2L lenses anyways.

Had the 'cron-C and now have the Nokton MC. The cron was smaller, and had nicer color rendition (imo). But the nokton seems more contrasty, is 1 stop faster, has much better flare resistance and is very well made.

Maybe other people have special bokeh receptors in their eyes that I lack, but to me, the cron had bright ring bokeh and the the nokton does too - so I think any claimed "superior bokeh" for the cron is an imagined artifact due to preconceptions. Or else, people are comparing nokton bokeh at F1.4 vs. cron bokeh at f2.
