David Strick has done work in this vein as well and there is Susan Meiselas'

bokk on Carny Strippers, which yhas recently been reprinted and you can find

through Amazon. Most of the modern "porn" business is centered in the Los

Angeles area., but thre are topless bars in virtually all medium and l large

cities.

My advice is to not really look too much at work on the same subject that

others have done, but to look at the classic documentary work done by people

like Bruce Davidson (1ooth Street, Subway) or work by Steve McCurry on S.E.

Asia or at Jodi Cobb's book "Geisha".

is there a large sex industry in Istanbul?

I take this post on face value that your sincere in your interest in doing acutal documentary work on the porn industry...

but...

If I had a buck for every photographer/journo in Asia that I've run across who wanted to do a documentary/story/feature on prostitution, girly bars or the sex trade here in Asia and then ended up spending all their time and quite a bit of cash time doing 'research' and really just ended up becoming another customer.

I wouldn't be working as a photographer.

I'd be rich several times over.

Not sure about the porn industry in Turkey, but the fascinating thing about it in the US is that is the most wonderful the American way - with the US as both the biggest consumer and the biggest producer of porn worldwide, it is pure capitalism at work

The Big Mac becomes the Big Cock - and it makes a fascinating documentary study

(talking of partaking - I enjoy the stories about how Ferrato and her assistants had to become part of the swingers scene for the work - BTW - there is also an excellent film documentary about swingers in the US - called just that I think? - one very telling section was filmed in Columbine shortly before the school shooting. Turns out - probably like most places - Columbine really was not exactly a quiet, white picket fences, Truman Show suburb after all - there was a lot more going on behind closed doors than most would admit to - which again, makes for fascinating documentaries...)

".......i am interested in backstage of porn industry.........do you

Try googling Stefano de Luigi for the latest (utterly

un-)"concerned" reportage of the porn industry. The story's been

done over and over again, but I've never seen it done with any wit

or compassion. Having said that, a number of photographers

have addressed the issues of sex and desire with success. The

primary reason that the story keeps being covered is that sex

sells, it's that simple.

I have to echo the comments of Lucas regarding coverage of the

sex industry in Asia. There are so many stories and issues to be

covered in the region, but you could be forgiven for imagining that

Asia is just one big freak show of prostitution and kick-boxing. A

significant number of expat photographers in the region long ago

crossed the line between documentarists and punters in the sex

industry.

There seems to be a lot of confusion here. The "porn industry" does not mean "strippers" or "prostitutes."

Larry Sultan's book is excellent (as the show probably is, but I haven't seen that), but it's not be glamorous or seedy. Very different than what you would expect. If you want to see interesting work on Asian sex workers, check out Reagan Louie.

While 'strippers' and 'prostitutes' aren't a direct translation of 'porn industry' in many cases they are part and parcel with it.

And for much of the porn that is produced in Asia they are the porn industry. For much of the W.Euro porn - the girls come out of E. Euro countries - from hard lives onto harder lives. For the states it's primarily coming out the San Fernando valley.

What is laughable is that it seems there is always someone who has the idea they want to get into the porn industry. They usually see it as a ticket to free shagging - their mind is focussed on the 'content provider' side of the biz. But in reality it's all about distribution - just like music or anything else - you can make the best 'Teen Debutantes in Heat' but if you don't have distribution you got nothin'. The web has changed the industry quite a bit - now 'distribution' is somewhat easier - hence the proliferation of niche market sites.

A while back at Photosig.com there was one guy who did do a series of portraits in Thailand of working girls. They were all done b/w shot with a Leica. There was a very interesting book in the last couple of years called Hello My Big Big Honey that offered some insight into the sex industry in Asia. Worth a read.

There was a very good article on some of the American porn industry in Rolling Stone

about 7 or 8 years ago (...I think). There were some really great photos in it. Porn stars in

bathrobes, smoking cigarettes, etc. It was all shot in BW, and looked really good. Maybe

you could search for it on their site. I don't know how they archive previous issues.

Most documentaries/reportage about the adult industries just serve to marginalize the participants while providing their own vicarious thrills. The reality show on Showtime "Family Business" does the best job of demystifying the industry. But what needs to be done is a documentary on the porn consumers (i.e., all of us).
