Have you customized your camera?

Recommended Posts

People customize all sorts of things. Old cars, new cars, bikes, planes, homes, etc. Older cameras are a pretty good candidate too but I don't see very many done. All black all the time seems to be the norm. I have been tempted for a while to re skin a few rangefinder I have. Some look real good in leather.

Beautiful Contax Michael. Nice C3 and Ricoh also. My only customization is that I have a Leica R4, that the previous owner scraped out all the white from the lettering. He/She even painted over the red dot. ????? I uncovered the dot, and added RED lettering. Sorry, I'm in the office, and don't have the camera porn to show. I think it looks great though.

Here is my makeover of a Universal Camera Corporation Meteor. The faux-leather covering was sourced from a purse which I purchased at the thrift store for just such a purpose. Combined with the contrasting black paint job ("appliance paint" from the hardware store) I think it gives this humble camera a much classier look than the original. Which, if you are not familiar, come covered in a very cheap black paper-like skin and unpainted aluminum tops and bottoms.

Alas, no pics:
F2 Photomic reskinned in dark green leather
F3HP reskinned in "Griptac" textured rubber - super grippy
OM-4T, OM-1n, both reskinned in "Griptac" and each fitted with a brighter (2/3 stop) Lumi Micron screen salvaged from OM-PC bodies. Early August 2009, I refinished the "M" on the "OM" logo on each body in red enamel to commemorate the passing of Maitani. Each camera is a tiny memorial to the genius behind the OM's.

Some people had some difficulties with Cameraleather a while back, but I have dealt with him numerous times for some years now, and he has always come through for me.
For example, I did this Exakta VX (which had no intact cover left) with real kid leather and I love it. I like to think (as most vandals do) that Exakta would have done this if they had thought of it.

Even if you don't buy the cover from him, his instructions on installation (the "wet" instructions) are very helpful.

00bv5b-541970284.jpg.3301fff55342006bea9719f1a9514a57.jpg
