chris_letts
<p>As there’s been a few discussions about backup speeds, e.g. for USB3, I thought I’d experiment myself (sorry if that sounds geeky!).<br>The following are <em>representative</em> speeds relating to extracting data from an SD card, and archiving data. I’m sure someone out there will disagree with the figures and there’s a whole host of reasons for them to differ between systems, but they’re correct for MY setup !<br>100x D600 NEF files in a single folder – 2.92GB total</p><p>Card Reading – Lexar Professional 400x</p><table border="1" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"><tbody><tr><td valign="top" width="236"><p><em>From</em></p></td><td valign="top" width="198"><p><em>To</em></p></td><td valign="top" width="66"><p><em>Seconds</em></p></td><td valign="top" width="101"><p><em>Transfer rate MB/sec</em></p></td></tr><tr><td valign="top" width="236"> </td><td valign="top" width="198"> </td><td valign="top" width="66"> </td><td valign="top" width="101"> </td></tr><tr><td valign="top" width="236"><p>SD card / USB3 external card reader</p></td><td valign="top" width="198"><p>USB3 external HDD</p></td><td valign="top" width="66"><p>58.57</p></td><td valign="top" width="101"><p>49.85</p></td></tr><tr><td valign="top" width="236"><p>SD card / USB3 external card reader</p></td><td valign="top" width="198"><p>Internal HDD</p></td><td valign="top" width="66"><p>59.08</p></td><td valign="top" width="101"><p>49.4</p></td></tr><tr><td valign="top" width="236"><p>SD card / USB2 internal card reader</p></td><td valign="top" width="198"><p>Internal HDD</p></td><td valign="top" width="66"><p>162.04</p></td><td valign="top" width="101"><p>18.02</p></td></tr><tr><td valign="top" width="236"><p>SD card / USB2 external card reader</p></td><td valign="top" width="198"><p>Internal HDD</p></td><td valign="top" width="66"><p>167.56</p></td><td valign="top" width="101"><p>17.4</p></td></tr><tr><td valign="top" width="236"><p>SD card / USB2 external card reader</p></td><td valign="top" width="198"><p>USB2 external HDD</p></td><td valign="top" width="66"><p>203.88</p></td><td valign="top" width="101"><p>14.3</p></td></tr></tbody></table><p>Data backup:</p> <table border="1" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"><tbody><tr><td valign="top" width="236"><p>Internal HDD</p></td><td valign="top" width="198"><p>second internal HDD</p></td><td valign="top" width="66"><p>39.87</p></td><td valign="top" width="101"><p>73.24</p></td></tr><tr><td valign="top" width="236"><p>Internal HDD</p></td><td valign="top" width="198"><p>different folder, same drive</p></td><td valign="top" width="66"><p>41.21</p></td><td valign="top" width="101"><p>70.86</p></td></tr><tr><td valign="top" width="236"><p>Internal HDD</p></td><td valign="top" width="198"><p>external USB3 HDD</p></td><td valign="top" width="66"><p>44.11</p></td><td valign="top" width="101"><p>66.20</p></td></tr><tr><td valign="top" width="236"><p>Internal HDD</p></td><td valign="top" width="198"><p>USB3 flash drive</p></td><td valign="top" width="66"><p>55.65</p></td><td valign="top" width="101"><p>52.47</p></td></tr><tr><td valign="top" width="236"><p>Internal HDD</p></td><td valign="top" width="198"><p>USB2 external HDD</p></td><td valign="top" width="66"><p>124.47</p></td><td valign="top" width="101"><p>3.46</p></td></tr><tr><td valign="top" width="236"><p>Internal HDD</p></td><td valign="top" width="198"><p>USB2 flash drive</p></td><td valign="top" width="66"><p>731.40</p></td><td valign="top" width="101"><p>3.99</p></td></tr></tbody></table><p>I did this having just added USB3 to my PC (via a PCIexpress X1 card) and a USB3 HDD - as you can see from the above, I'm now transferring data about 2.5-3 times faster.<br>The only way I have to increase further is via an SSD, but one of my previous postings will tell you the reason why I can't/won't do that!</p>

David_Cavan
Thank you. Were there any surpises in this data for you or was it about what you expected? And are there any area where you are looking to improve the speeds and what might you do to improve that? Just interested in what the data means. chris_letts
<p>David - no real surprises - I'd already heard that the 10x USB3 improvement was theoretical so 3x is acceptable. I'm happy with that speed for my archiving. I guess the nub of the message is don't expect miracles with USB3, but it's still worth it.<br> A.T. - Card Reading – Lexar Professional 400x - as it says above !</p>
chris_letts
<p>re: the SD card - the Lexar 400 is I think rated to 60MB/sec so it's quite possible a faster card would yield faster results on USB3 but probably not by much (and I'm not going to buy new SD cards just to find out !)</p>
David_Cavan
<p>Thanks Chris. 3X would be nice - I'm about due for a computer upgrade generally so its good to know that.</p> Dave Cavan https://davecavanphotographics.com/
