modern_kogaku
Hello everyone,
this once was my favourite snapshot camera. Almost as small as a modern digi compact, capable of taking 72 quite sharp and contrasty pictures on a roll of film -- and yet beautiful and modern looking, Canon Demi EE17 is true classic and fun to play with.

-- cute! This design deserves to be viewed from every side:

-- front.

-- top.

-- sides.

-- bottom.

-- back.
modern_kogaku
It's hard to select which pictures to show.. Well, one of the interesting experiences with using a half-frame cameras is that regular labs are printing the pictures by pairs, which gives an interesting effect, like a story. The second thing that worth noticing is that this camera encourages composing a shot in portrait orientation. Ok, enough said, now to the pictures. First, some pairs:

Seatoun.
--

Unofficial
--

Red things.
--

Neighbourhood.
--

Floral.
--

Moto
--

Skater. tomscott
It is truly a gorgeous camera and your pics show that it is quite capable. I have to stop looking at these. Repeat to self: I don't need any more cameras.
Mike Gammill
Outstanding. The Demi was one of the best (well so were the Pens). Thanks for posting.
starvy
I love the look of the camera! It is cute. Looks so modern as well. I don't think that I had ever heard of it before. It must have been quite an expensive camera in its day?

JDMvW
Very nice to learn about this camera. Another one I didn't know about, and like some of the others, it stirs one to acquire a copy of it when one sees what you've done with it.

Thanks.
Lou_Meluso
A delightful camera, Dimitri, with clean, clear pics of your fine example. But your photos with it are just as lovely and I lingered over each one. So nice to see these classics in use. Thanks!

jon_shumpert2
I have an earlier model canon Demi and am amazed at how good it is. I had an Olympus pen EES, but after using them side by side I prefer the Demi. It feels solid, the meter is pretty accurate and the images are sharp. I had it for a year or so before I could use it because the light seals were bad. I got the seals from aki-asahi and it is now the camera I have with me at all times. I really liked the look on the photo lab techs face the first time she saw the negatives. Awesome little camera!

Your testimonial of the Canon Demi is so convincing, Dmitri, I just know my wife will allow me to buy one !
rick_drawbridge
Nice, Dmitri, even if it is half-frame...;-). It's certainly a gem of a camera. I grew up at Lyall Bay, just round the coast, and that's all familiar territory. Thanks for great post.
gnashings
Dmitri, looking over your posts, I have to say I am filling to the brim with a very friendly and respectful, yet undeniably green envy:) You have some very interesting cameras, a wonderful eye, and do a great job sharing both with the rest of us. Kudos and thank you.
ridinhome
Dmitri - very very nice and a true classic. The moto shots are especially well done. I like the use of half-frames to tell a story within two frames.

Now you've made me want one of these!
ken_jeanette1
Such classic lines, and a great picture taker too. A question does come to mind. When digital cameras were first hitting the market, with their lens tucked up into the corner and looking more like portable radios. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING. Even if half the items weren't functional, they should have made it look good to a "photographers" eye.
k5083
Beautiful! I'm sure I'm not the only person who has shied away from this genre on the theory that full frame 135 is low enough resolution already, but you make a compelling case that this is a mistake. capitalq
Dmitri: It truly warms the cockles of my heart to see another photographer sing the praises of a half-frame camera -- especially one as well-made as the Demi. (See my earlier post here: http://www.photo.net/classic-cameras-forum/00WO21)
I have two earlier versions of the camera with built-in selenium meters: the original Demi (f.2.8) and the faster Demi S (f 1.7). Both were very well made with a sharp and contrasty lenses and still accurate Seikosha shutters. In my opinion, these well-designed cameras were superior to what most other manufacturers were doing at the time (except for the Oly Pen F and the Konica Auto-Reflex).

Here's to hoping that some more folks here catch the bug...

modern_kogaku
Hi Capital Q -- yes, the Oly Pen F is superior, but being an SLR it's from another league. Speaking of scale-focusing automates, the Demi quite may be the best one. Thanks for pointing me to your earlier post -- those are great portraits and the pairing effect really adds extra magic to them.
modern_kogaku
Hi August, not a mistake.. But I think, no one is going to print their snapshots big anyway, and for a small print 35mm film is adequate. When I go shooting landscapes I take my Mamiya c330 (and I wish I had time and money for LF photography!). But in regular life I am always taking a 35mm camera with me. Sometimes I regret that I can't print a shot taken onto 135 big enough, but I believe, that any taken picture is better than a missed opportunity.
Anyway, for any format a better camera gives a better result, so I am very happy I found this gem. Thanks.
modern_kogaku
Ken, lol :) Yes those were ugly. But the first cars were ugly too.. Probably some day we'll see a digital camera which is not resembling a film one and still is beautiful.
