htarragon
I've checked out both online but really don't know which might be better for Pentax. I have two Vivitar 283's and an AF 540FGZ.
Any suggestions? Will the Vivitars fry the Yongnuos?
jordan2240
Howard,

I have a set of rf603 yongnuo triggers I've used with the Pentax af280T flash, and nothing got 'fried.' No experience with your specific flashes though.

Bill
john_shriver
There are both high-voltage and low-voltage versions of the Vivitar 283.
As for the Yongnou, this page shows some models with a 12 volt limit, and some with a 300 volt limit. The 300 volt models should handle the Vivitar 283.
This page shows how to add a circuit to old Vivitar 283's to lower the trigger voltage.
htarragon
Thanks for the links, John. I'll be looking closely at the tolerated voltages. I haven't held a soldering iron since I was a teenager, so I don't think I'll try lowering the voltage on my Vivitars.
hjoseph7
I tried the cowboy triggers (3) but 1 of them was a dud so I sent them back, and got the Cactus v5. Compared to the Cowboy triggers the Cactus triggers looked and felt more solid and built to higher quality.

ralbeck
I use the Youngnou rf602 triggers with my studio lights (AlienBees B800's) and they also work fine with my 2 Af540FGZ Pentax flashes also. I got a set of rf603's but they wouldn't trigger on the Pentax K20 or K3 for some reason. I have shot 10 weddings with the RF-602's and they never fail. The best feature is that it eliminates the random triggering I used to get when Aunt Mabel or Grandma fired off their pocket cameras and triggered my light based triggers. And the built-in flash based Pentax remote triggering system doesn't work in bright ambient light either. The rf602's receivers have AAA batteries which is a great feature. Other systems use Lithium cells that cost $5 each. Havent had to replace the receiver batteries in a full year of use. They are also fast enough to catch a hair flip or jump shot.
I have two Vivitar 283's. A Digital multimeter on one reads 300 volts at the connector. Not good for ANY digital system. The other newer 283 reads 5 volts. I trashed the one with 300 volts it's a dinosaur.
