As a photograph it's terrible.

As an impressionistic piece of artwork????.

Captured this image of a small herd of Caribou crossing the tundra (or semi-tundra actually) of Denali NP in July of 1997 (shortly after I retired). We were on our way out of the park. It was cold, light levels were low under a heavily overcast sky, a stiff breeze made it feel even colder, and a cold drizzly rain was falling. Perfect pneumonia weather. The bus stopped to let these caribou cross. there were 8 or 9 of us, we all piled out and started clicking. Handheld no flash and probably shivering a little. Took the shot, was going to toss it, but decided to put it through the editing program and see. This was the result.

Play around with it in Photoshop. Often, imperfect shots can be made into something visually pleasing if they still have compositional attributes going for them.

Here I've cropped the top, fully sharpened (in my Mac OSX Preview sharpener), then despeckled in PS. The scene has a certain "flow of movement" about it, from the deer on the left disappearing below the hill crest, to the last deer to the right. It has the potential to look a bit "artful" by post processing. In a small frame, it would perhaps make a nice little decorative pic standing in a bookshelf, or on a wall in a child's bedroom.

1997? too bad there were no smart phones back then- you'd have a decent shot! :p

I dunno about that. Granted, smart phones have come a long way since #1 but the conditions under which I got this shot were pretty bad.

No. Maybe just keep it unedited as a memory of the event.

It actually doesn't look too bad printed out on a matte finish paper. I do like the effect of those speckles (don't know what else to call them) though.

Like Kmacs crop too.

Personally, I like it, so does my wife.

Thankyou!

Cropped and resized in Preview and fiddled with in Silver Efex.

Oh yeah!!

Hmmm! Don't what "Silver Efex" is but seeing how it came out, I'm thinking maybe I'll do a grayscale or b\w version.

OK! Here's the grayscale version I mentioned a couple of replies ago. Not sure if it's done yet. Right now I've got it sitting on the puter as a layered psd.

What I did (so far) is crop, desaturate, isolated the caribou on a separate layer, adjusted brightness and contrast on background layer and caribou layer individually, merged down, reopened in PSP and applied a "time machine, early color" effect (I know, it's grayscale. Thought I'd give a try anyway.). Not as good as Bills "Silver Efex" version, but I'm open to suggestions.

The picture does evoke that something dreary was going on, but if you had no explained it to us it might as well had been Caribou running after a Nuclear Explosion. On the other hand, some famous paintings have been made using this style which is called Pointillism ( a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of color are applied in patterns to form an image) which this picture reminds me of (sort of)... Thank you! Hadn't noticed that magenta cast before, Don't know if I'd have tried removing it if I had. Based on the way it printed out I'd say probably not. How much of the purple in those hills is due to sunlight filtering through the heavy overcast and how much is vegetation I don't know. Ground cover (at least in the area of Denali where we were) is tundra or near tundra and contrary to what many may think, tundra vegetation is pretty lush.

Good point!

(pun intended).

As far as motion and sharpness are concerned, the image plays very well as is. You may want to try to remove the magenta cast from the coats of the caribou, but I hope that does not come at the expense of the " .. purple mountains majesty ... " because that part of the background makes the picture lyrical in a way.

Agreed.
