Leslie Reid
You are invited to upload one or more of your landscape photos and, if you’d like, to accompany your image with some commentary: challenges you faced in making the image? your intent for the image? settings? post-processing decisions? why you did what you did? the place and time? or an aspect you’d like feedback on? And please feel free to ask questions of others who have posted images or to join the discussion. If you don’t feel like using words, that’s OK too—unaccompanied images (or unaccompanied words, for that matter) are also very much welcomed. As for the technicalities, the usual forum guidelines apply: files < 1 MB; image size <1000 px maximum dimension. Here’s an odd atmospheric phenomenon from day before yesterday that I’d never seen from the ground before: a “glory.” The sun had just risen, and that’s my shadow in the center of the rainbow-like circle of light. I was looking down from a bluff, and there was a thin layer of fog over the river below. The reason that glories aren’t often seen from the ground is that the sun needs to be directly behind you, and you need to be looking into mist; this means that you’re most likely to see them from airplanes or mountain tops. Eastern tradition suggests that the person whose shadow is in the center of the glory has attained enlightenment. However, I have incontrovertible evidence indicating that this is not the case.

sallymack
Leslie, how cool is that! I've seen this phenomenon out at the wetlands under the conditions you describe, looking down from a berm, my shadow and my bicycle's were in the center. I'm pretty sure I haven't attained enlightenment, maybe the bike has.

JDMvW
As for Glory (optical phenomenon) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia A glory is an optical phenomenon that resembles an iconic saint's halo about the shadow of the observer's head, caused by light of the Sun or (more rarely) the Moon interacting with the tiny water droplets that make up mist or clouds. The glory consists of one or more concentric, successively dimmer rings, each of which is red on the outside and bluish towards the centre. Due to its appearance, the phenomenon is sometimes mistaken for a circular rainbow, but the latter has a much larger diameter and is caused by different physical processes. Glories arise due to wave interference of light internally refracted within small droplets. A glory of Egypt
james_lai
Perhaps not as rare, but I saw a double rainbow a couple of days ago over Glacier National Park (British Columbia, Canada).
