  1. Another entry from our recent stop at Grand Canyon.
  2. Image captured late this afternoon from South Rim, Grand Canyon. It has been raining off and on all day and the clouds started to lift just before dark.
  3. Nikon D810+Micro-Nikkor 105mm/2.8 Rafted pond ice at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, Brigham City, Utah.
  4. So, the most interesting "new" feature, at least for me, is that I can once again access PNet using my account on other than one, old, legacy computer. Hurray! This has been a major frustration for me for nearly a year. I'll be in a much better position to renew my participation, though workload in the day job is still a major impediment.
  5. Basic Guidelines: In the strictest sense, nature photography should not include "hand of man elements". Please refrain from images with buildings or human made structures like roads, fences, walls. Pets are not permitted. Captive subjects in zoos, arboretums, or aquariums are permitted, but must be declared, and must focus on the subject, not the captivity. Images with obvious human made elements will likely be deleted from the thread, with an explanation to the photographer. Guidelines are based on PSA rules governing Nature photography which also cover the Nature Forum. Keep your image at/under 1000 pixels on the long axis for in-line viewing. Note that this includes photos hosted off-site at Flicker, Photobucket, your own site, etc Each member please post no more than just one image to this weekly thread per week. If the information is available, many members appreciate information on your approach to making the image and the names, both common and scientific, of the subject(s). However, while encouraged, these are not required as a component of your contributions. More mountain wildflowers. These are such a wonderful break from our drought-stricken norm that I simply can't help myself coming back to them.
  6. In my world wildflowers are absolutely fair game. I was brought up waiting around for my dad to capture the perfect wildflower shots on our backpacking trips. (I still have the Nikkormat EL he used for many of those.)
  7. There is no "current only" policy of which I am aware. Besides, what would be an acceptable definition of "current"? I frequently go back into my archives (shallow as they may be) for inspiration, or to see if I can extract something more pleasing using my more mature processing skills. Please don't think that images we share here must be within a specific time frame. The only boundaries are content and authorship.
  8. Thank you to everyone for engaging and keeping things going. I came up for air long enough to post an image from this holiday weekend (Pioneer Day here in Utah), but this coming week is going to be another tough one, including a quick trip to St. George for a project meeting and site inspection. Hoping I'll be available for Nature Unlimited and MiN, but we'll have to see how things go. Thanks again for all that you do!
  9. I'll try to contribute as well. Colors here not as spectacular as New England, but we can have amazing combinations of snow, fall colors, and red rocks. I promise to do what I can do.
  10. Cacophony of wildflowers, along the Mirror Lake Highway (Utah 150), Summit County, Utah. Utah and most of the US South-West are in an extreme drought. And yet, on a long weekend drive in the mountains, today we happened upon this spectacular vignette, right along the roadside. It seems our mountains have benefited enormously from some local rain, even if the region is drying up and blowing away. Captured with iPhone 12 Pro and edited in LR5.

  12. A Masterpiece to house masterpieces. They Getty, Los Angeles, California (Architect: Richard Meier).
  13. This is the additional weekly image thread for the Nature Forum. While images posted to this thread should still be nature in theme, it may contain a small amount of human-made objects and therefore less restricted than the Monday in Nature threads. Please see this discussion for more details: Alternative weekly thread in Nature forum Each participant please post no more than just one image per weekly thread. Many members will appreciate any information you are willing or able to provide regarding location, shooting process, exposure settings, equipment, and information on the subject(s), including scientific and/or common names. Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) blowing, near Juneau, Alaska.
  14. "Can someone with better ornithological knowledge than I please confirm or correct my identification? Captured from the same frustrating tour bus as last week's caribou." Correction: Further research suggests this is more likely a Willow Ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus), though the differences between this and the Rock Ptarmigan look to be fairly nuanced. By the bye, Willow Ptarmigan is the Alaska State Bird.
  15. Misty Fjords National Monument, Alaska.

While snorkeling off Cozumel, Mexico. Captured with my old Samsung J7 in an inexpensive housing, no flash. Tour operator insisted we wear "properly" inflated horse collar vests, so diving down for closer shots and better color was, sadly, not an option.
