JDMvW
As I posted elsewhere, I've standardized on a card size that, for me, is a day's worth of shooting for each camera I carry (you figure your own rate of shooting). Usually carry enough for the planned length of the trip. I back them up to a card-deck sized 1 TB drive and a laptop each night, but usually don't reuse the cards until I get home. I (knock silicon) have never yet had a CF card failure.

glen_h
I assume you mean wet plates ? I think so, but some might have still done it in the dry glass plate era. Depending on the plate cost and value of the negative. If case the shot completely failed, there isn't much reason to keep the negative. Maybe in other cases, once prints were made. In the days before production rate, economy of scale, glass plates, they might have been somewhat valuable as glass plates. -- glen
glen_h
When I got my D200, I found that I could change the three letter file name prefix, which I set to TWO. That way, I can at least keep separate pictures from different cameras. Then the D700 got DCC (that is, 700 in roman numerals). I have a four disk, 6TB, RAID 5 array, so one redundant disk in case of failure. There are failure modes for more that one disk. That is connected to the local network. I also have two Canvio Cloud devices, also on the network. Those are for all my household files, not just pictures. NFS mounted on different computers, so files are available where needed. Some time ago, I had backup tapes in a safe deposit box at the nearby bank. The bank moved, and I got them out. I haven't put new ones in the new bank yet. I like Ultrium (LTO) tapes, which are reasonably priced, and also should be fairly reliable. -- glen
DavidTriplett
establish a secure archive For family or historically (if only personal history) important images there are genealogy sites to which such images can be posted, where they will be archived and accessible to other interested parties. Likely not an appropriate spot for some, but certainly a good idea for others.
