monitors for d800

Hi all, this question has evolved from one that I posted on the Nikon forum, I was looking for an external live view screen/monitor to attach to my D800 to assist primarily with tilt shift manual focus still photography. For a short while it looked as if my HTC One phone was going to be a pretty good answer but even though it is listed as being compatible, it is not.

So now I'm looking at 5" - 7" monitors usually used for video work but maybe perfectly OK for live view stills, I don't need touch screen. I suspect all I need is a screen that duplicates the Nikon screen in color and resolution, is Nikon d800 compatible, has an easy battery system, a reasonably robust hot shoe attachment, an effect shade system and is modestly priced.

I have started looking at various products but have, as usual for me, got quite lost in the sheer number of products all claiming virtues that I don't understand. May be you guys can help? - thanks in advance - Clive

I don't think you're going to have much luck matching the exact look and resolution of the D800's rear screen. And that's not necessarily a bad thing, since you wouldn't normally rely on that display to judge exposure or white balance anyway (unless you're looking at the histogram, etc).

Shy of going with a nice tablet (like an iPad) and using the Camranger (which I like!), you might consider using one of the Lilliput HD monitors and an HD cable from the D800 up to the display. There are, as you've noticed, many versions of those products. Other makers of course also work in that space, with indeed a jillion different features. I use a couple of different Lilliput units, mostly in connection with ground-side drone operations. Some have internal batteries, and some use externals (like the Sony NP-F format, which are abundantly available). These displays are pretty easy on the batteries, so the internal flavor might suit you just fine and be easier to carry and use. Several versios ship with a hot shoe mount. Just remember that most of the more modestly priced units will only have HD-level resolution, or somewhat less. That should be plenty for your use, though. Order from a company like Amazon or B&H that will allow you to reverse the transaction if you don't like working that way.

I can never keep those damn Lilliput model numbers straight. It's all about the feature combinatios, including whether or not there's discrete A/V inputs (vs or in addition to HDMI), power features, glossy vs matte screen, etc. (go matte! glossy is a huge annoyance when you're working outdoors, regardless of the sun shade method you go with). You just have to read the specs carefully. Your D810 may or may not have shipped with an appropriate HDMI cable ... my D600 did, as I recall.

Problem solved, I'm now the proud owner of a MustHD 5"monitor, thanks for the advice Roger. I'm glad I went 5" rather than larger, it's quite big enough. MustHD deserve a plug here, I ordered it on 22 Sept from mainland China, it was shipped 23 Sept, it arrived in Australia 25 Sept (Friday) and I got it from my post office in rural Australia yesterday, 28 Sept, and by my standards that's almost a postal record.

I did send their help desk a question, that too was attended to instantly, it very nice and comforting to receive service like that and, of course the product works exactly as its supposed to.
