Ebay from Japan to Canada

Recommended Posts

Six or eight years ago I bought a Canon P rangefinder camera from a well-known ebay rangefinder guy named jiri_e (or something like that). It went off fine. jiri_e is a well-respected guy, and people here have said good things about him. I might have bought a lens or two from other Japanese dealers over the years, too-- I can't remember.

I don't remember how jiri_e shipped the Canon P, but I don't recall any headaches. It's no longer the case that you have to go to Canada Customs during office hours-- for postal shipments, you can just pick it up and pay the duty and GST at the post office.

Just purchased a lens from a Japan eBay seller a couple of weeks ago. Shipping via Japanese Post EMS to Canada was both fast and inexpensive compared to sending the same parcel in the other direction via Canada Post. Lens arrived in less than a week.

As my purchase was just under $100 declared value, it cleared customs without any taxes levied. Should your potential purchase exceed the value where it clears tax free (and there seems to be no hard and fast value threshold in my experience) you will only need to pay GST/HST/PST plus a Canada Post handling fee, $9.95 currently.

There are no duties applied to SLR camera lenses imported from Japan. You will only be charged the sales taxes applicable in your province.

Last year I bought a Canon FTb black body from a seller in Japan. Wanted it for my collection of cameras I've owned in the past. Pretty good deal, $20 plus $20 postage. Got it in about two weeks, no customs charges. My small eBay purchases from China are now taking about six weeks to get here.

Have had very good experience from Japan, EMS post (rapid and seemingly secure) and well described equipment. For certain items there are more in Japan than in NA, so availability and quality seem good. But just one person's experience.
