Thanks, I just used the older version this weekend. I could not find any way to use it with dual monitors. Does anybody know if it will support two monitors like Nikon View NX2 does?

View NX-i is aavailable for download at Nikonusa. The website states that if you download it it will uninstall Nikon View NX2. It appears that you have the choice of using one or the other but not both at the same time.
I could not find out if View NX-i will support all of the older NEF files and allow you to access Capture NX2 as well as ND X, new version.

Connect the second display before you launch Capture NX-D.
Highlight a thumbnail and then there are 3 ways to show on the second screen, hardest to easiest :

on menu on top, View, View Mode and choose Full Screen

on the Tool Bar click on the Icon with arrows pointed to the corners, Full Screen on second screen

just press F

The highlighted thumbnail will be displayed on the second screen

I will try View NX-i later, but I so used to View NX-2 because I can browse 2 folders at the same time, NX-D for RAW and NX-2 to TIFF/JPG. I would like to keep both for a while. Let me check.

If you mean older RAW from older machines, I think so. If you mean old RAW from Capture NX2, it reads most settings now, the test I did it before messes with RAW cropped with C NX-2, didn't check this verion 1.2.0 yet.

Hello,
I am having a problem with ViewNX-I. I installed it on Windows 8.1. It uninstalled View NX2 as expected, and finished the installation successfully. However, when I start the application, nothing happens. I look at the Task Manager and find it is running in the background, but nowhere to be seen on the monitor. I connect my D7000, nothing happens.
Anyone experiences this problem, please share/point me to the right direction to make this work. I have uninstalled and reinstalled View NX-i a couple of time, all to no avail. Capture NX-d also installed and it runs fine.

Thank you

MM for the time being i wil NOT install View NX-I, and also have no reason to install Capture NX-D.
View NX-I will not support a lot of functions that View NX-2 does ( like the camera profiles for portrait and landscape ,)and also the "lens corrections ( automatically remove a lot of CA and the like) is not implemented in the combo View NX-i / Capture NX-d.
Nikon says : "Functions for processing and adjusting still images equivalent to those available with ViewNX 2 will be included in ViewNX-i with future versions."
clearly indicating that View NX-i atm cannot replace View NX-2 fully

Nikon stopped also suporting Capture NX already, so it feels that , while Nikon kept the F-mount for over 50 years to stay "backward compatibe"as much as feasable, the strategy for processing the Digital pictures seems to be completely different.

To me te recent software strategy by Nikon does not feel good at all, and it makes me consider to say goodbye to nikon after 35+ years of using Nikon and switching to something else...

C.P.M. I agree: With my D800 processing through ViewNX 2, Capture NX2, and PSE 11 with Google plugins, I do not plan to buy a D810 because that would mean having to forgo NX2 View and Capture, although I'm sure it is an improvement over the D800. And, since I use an Asus Gamer Notebook with 16 GB of RAM, I'm looking at Corel After Shot Pro 2 because one review I read makes the point that Corel is quicker on a Notebook than Lightroom which is a popular alternative. Horses for courses you might say.

Adriano, thank you for the info. I downloaded the new version of CNX-D already.

C.P.M.: maybe the current version of ViewNX-i does not support camera profiles and lens corrections like you want, but those functions are available already in the CNX-D. The current CNX-D is even somewhat compatible with the ViewNX-2. As an example exposure compensation made in VNX-2 is taken into account in VNX-D.
In the near future I will move to CNX-D as my primary image tool. The reason I have not done that is mainly the fact that CNX-D and how it operates needs more cpu power than ViewNX-2 + CNX-2.
I will continue to use CNX-2 as long as feasible.
I have no hurry with the View NX-i.

I agree that Nikon's software support is appalling as they are trying to phase out the older, functional software and replace it (too soon) with new software which doesn't quite work yet. I think Nikon should put more resources into testing and development of software so that we wouldn't have to always go through some hoops with the frequent bugs. For example ViewNX 2.10.2 works perfectly on my computer (no longer downloadable from Nikon though) but 2.10.3 crashes when I select the My Pictures folder, every time. There is nothing wrong with the files there, they work fine in other software including ViewNX 2.10.2. The discrepancy between the quality of software and hardware+firmware that Nikon make is quite startling. One would think that they would put in place similar quality control for the software that they make as they do for the firmware in the cameras, but no. I guess firmware is easier to develop and test because they know exactly the hardware that it runs on, and all the code that runs in the camera, whereas PC software has to be able to run on numerous hardware and software configurations and so the testing needs to include many systems, to have validity.

ViewNX-i seems to work ok except at times on my computer it takes a break of maybe 30 seconds, before displaying an image (even though it is a tiny jpg). I haven't tried yet the new NX-D. I hope Nikon can get the new software on track and I would like them to continue updating ViewNX2 and Capture NX2 for a couple of years and then if they must, discontinue the older software only when the successors have been fully developed and tested.

2.10.2 is still floating around, e.g.:

I haven't bothered with VNX-2 (or VNX-i) since I installed Capture NX-D. It's a bit slow, but that's really the only problem I have with it. The image browser is decent enough not to have to bother with a separate program. We've lost some of the advanced features of the old payware (mainly the CNX control points), but on the other hand with NX-D we're getting a more capable free product than VNX-2. The conversion quality seems to be the same as always, and if anything I prefer a sidecar file to editing the NEF directly (with the potential to corrupt it).

After working the whole afternoon with C NX-D 1.2.0 without any problem I tested View NX-i and I like it. Looks the same for me with a few more features and one less.

I was concerned that it would have just one browser for NX-i and NX-D but no, they are independent actually. I can continue to use NX-D to browse RAW and NX-i for TIFF and JPG.

The only thing that is missing is the Edit Panel. I wasn't using it anymore, just Crop sometimes, so I'm not missing.

These are the new features that I notice are:

Filtering using EXIF data. You can search for a few settings on current folder like Date Shot, Camera Name, Lens, Focal Length, ISO, and others. Very useful.

Now there is a Export Icon on the tool bar with 2 options: Convert Files and Contact Sheet.

Convert Files have more options and now it is possible to adjust the quality for JPEG from 1 to 100. There is a new option Save In that enable to choose a folder or choose save as original which means current folder, same as V NX-2 Current Folder.

Contact Sheet creates a JPEG file as a Contact Sheet, it nice to print a contact sheet elsewhere, save or send the contact sheet. There are some parameters to help format the layout of the page, define information to be printed below the page and define resolution.

There is a new icon on the tool bar (2 arrows, left and right) that on click hide/unhide the Left and Right panels, expanding the browser.

Also, there is a Slide Show that I didn't care to test.

The EXIF data now can be shown as before (text) or as a very close screen shot of the camera screen when pressed i bottom

I've been using C-NXD for while for RAW files and I'm happy with these updates. A little slow on my computer, but still ok. I still use Capture NX-2 but mostly for product pictures to clean dust and sometimes to blur background with the C NX-2 paint tools, by the way very useful tool, too much work on Photoshop to do the same thing. To final touch I work with TIFF files and Nik Collection Stand Alone using Open With on NX-D, V NX-2 and now the same way with NX-i.

I loaded Capture NX-D on my MAC. I noticed that it erased View NX-2 so I retuned to the Nikon down load center and reloaded View NX2. I now have both Capture NX-D, and View NX-2 on my computer.
It gives me the flexibility to use the program of my choice.

A question while we on the NX-D topic. Is anyone using a network drive in conjunction with NX-D on Windows 7? While Windows Explorer (is that what the file manager is called?) can see all the folders on the network drive and the associated NEF files, NX-D can't see anything below the top level drive and it seems to hang while looking.
There is a caveat in that I'm running Windows 7 with Virtualbox under GNU/Linux where shared directories appear as network drives but I've had no trouble with anything else and in any case, as mentioned above, the Windows file manager is fine.
Thanks in advance.

Given all of these changes with Nikon software, I suggest that everyone make backup copies of Nikon View NX2 and Capture NX2 downloads and keep them in a save place, away from auto uninstall, etc.
I agree that Nikon is crazy not to be fully supporting its software. Why make good cars you want to sell if you do not provide the keys for them? I admit that this analogy is not perfect, but it gets the point across.

About NX-D and Windows local network sorry but I don't have the answer.

For sure for those who use Capture NX-2 and View NX-2 is imperative to keep a copy of the last version and may be also of one before on a safe place.

But I think is funny people complaint about the phase out of Capture NX-2 (I use it an like it very much) replaced with a free one and at the same time I heard here people saying that still run Photoshop 5.x and 6.x and don't want to upgrade, the same with Elements (I use 12). And these guys with older version of Photoshop keep a copy of the older version as a natural thing, why not with Nikon software ?

The big problem with old software is with RAW from new cameras to be recognized, the same with any software.

View NX-i replaces V NX-2 as it did with previous versions because they are basically the same, looks like the same core as you can see on preferences pages , just a new interface with some new features, as it happens with others software, difference between Elements 10, 11,12 and 13, new things and cut some of the others. And Nikon is promising the editing come back on September.

I think Nikon is giving free a good pair software compared with others brands, may be the best RAW converter for Nikon camera. I heard a lot of problem from Fuji users specially about custom White Balance conversion, I never hear of Canon software, do they have one ? What about Leica ? They are all purist that only start from flat RAW (I know there are some start points) or they don't have another choice ? I'm asking because I really don't know.

Some discussion here at PN talking about RAW conversion always point C NX-2, C-NXD, V NX2 and now V NXi as a good or the best option to develop and convert Nikon RAW files, I'd never seen the same with other brands other than 3rd part software, PS, DxO and so. So why everybody say "Nikon is crazy not to be fully supporting its software". They fix a bug I pointed out (not only me of course) in one month on NX-D version 1.1.0 with version 1.2.0 (the crop problem). They stopped C NX-2 mostly because of royalties problem and we have to live with that.

I've still got CaptureNX2 installed, to be able to 'access' the old edits in the NEF files. It'll stay there pretty much forever I guess (for all more recent work, moved on to another tool, so NX-D and NX-i aren't very important for my uses). And as much as I liked CNX2, I think Nikon made a good move in making NX-D a free option and removing the half-baked editing tools out of ViewNX2. For free software, it really isn't bad.

Andy,

I wouldn't make my design based on a single review that states something in broad strokes as this - there are plenty of difference between notebooks that may make this statement completely false.
Instead, I would download and trial the main contenders - Lightroom, AfterShot, DxO and CaptureOne, and see which tools delivers the best workflow and speed on your system, and which works the way you like. There isn't a review in the world that can tell you suits your preferences and ideas of a useable UI best, nor how a tool performs on every different system.

Richard,
Same here: 'local' drives all recognized and accessible, network drive recognized but not accessible from within NX-D.
It is possible though to use the OS's explorer instead of NX-D's browser.
I'm using plain vanilla Windows 7 64 bit, so it's not due to using virtual machines inside a different OS.

I do not think so, since View NX2 can be used as stand alone for Raw & Jpeg ( or Tiff) processing, whereas ViewNX-i relies on Capture NX-D for raw processing.
Also View NX-i needs a ( yet another) package for " picture Control", and automatic Lens Corrections ( CL-A ) are not available anymore.
In addition, none of the new packages seem to allow for any plugin's so no Nik-plugins etc. are totally out of the picture using the recent Nikon software.

I recently installed View NXi and Capture NX-D. They are nice products, and I think a substantial improvement in the user interface over View NX2, which was previously used for both editing and file management. My only nit is that Capture is a bit sluggish editing D800 45meg files. This is on a late 2012 2.9GHz iMac running OS-X 10.10.2. The Df files run just fine, which is the majority of my images.

I do not think so, since View NX2 can be used as stand alone for Raw & Jpeg

I said it looks like is the same core, I really not sure, but it looks like. The edit functions is not there yet, Nikon says "Functions for processing and adjusting still images equivalent to those available with ViewNX 2 will be included in ViewNX-i with future versions. Our current plan is to offer the updated version that will enable these functions around September 2015.". I understand that they are disable for now. Just as a joke, may be they're trying to figure out where they going to put it because I can't see there is room for that :) For me, the only edit function I miss on V NX-i is the crop for TIFFs to adjust printing sizes.

The picture control can be loaded on File menu but I agree that you can't save the current picture settings as Picture Control preset with NX-i or NX-D as you can with C NX-2. I don't remember if was possible to save the preset with V NX-2.

Distortion Control on/off on C-NX-D is not the same of C-NX-2 automatic Lens Corrections with a different name ?

About the plugins you are right. On C-NX-2 the Nik plugins worked actually much better than on Photoshop because it was/is possible to use the NX-2 tools, like Brush, gradients, etc.. Also it was possible to redo, turn each one on/off and have several versions of the picture, but in a very rare case of corruption you could lose the picture, not the case with side-car. There isn't or will have any other software that can do that so comfortable. As I said already several times here on PN, I use the Nik Collection with Open With function now,I do the same with C-NX2 to clean some dust. Calling Open With means to work with a big TIFF file, it works well but once saved and any change is needed I have to start again. If is a very special picture I can save the settings as a preset and reload it, but I can't do it for every picture, just don't make sense. I have to live with it, I don't want to go to Photoshop or Lightroom now, the only ones that can run Nik as plugins.

At the beginning I felt weird to work with side-car as there is not choice to save it or not. Now that I get used I like it, just go on browsing and adjusting, even more than one at the same time. Very easy, but not that fast with D7200 files, imagine with D8xx files, but as I use to say to a friend of mine: the delay gives me time to inspire me and think of what I'm doing.
