This past week I headed up to the Art Institute of Chicago for a business meeting. With the meeting over I had about an hour before my flight home and decided I would visit the galleries. The Canon S95 was used handheld with only gallery lighting.

00bR3A-524637584.jpg.deda332c130238cc8784af2d170bcf84.jpg

Like most museums, the gallery lighting was not consistent room to room. Still the S95 handled the changes well and rendered this Cassatt with both beautiful color and resolution so I can now enjoy it at my leisure at home. Most of the galleries have gray walls which help in zeroing color balance when processing the RAW files.

00bR3R-524637884.jpg.72ef004a56289410220662ed92b462dc.jpg

The Miniature Gallery is fascinating. These recreations are only about a foot square and have remarkable detail. The S95 is very versatile and handy camera to stuff in a pocket when you can't carry a bigger system.

Apologies for the two extra shots but they are a series.

00bR3W-524639584.jpg.d814fcbefad05d06a5af76eaf42140ca.jpg

No limit on photos...they have a very liberal camera policy at that museum. Security seems to be loosening up a bit on cameras now that virtually everyone has something to shoot with and enforcement becomes impossible.

Bought an Olympus 45mm 1:1.8 on Thursday and a well-known camera store in NYC delivered it overnight free of charge :-), so I didn't get much work done this weekend. First shot after unwrapping:

00bR8Z-524751684.jpg.e896094926c31b14a2510e72c5535efb.jpg

Manfred is the owner of a local camera shop. It is a wonderful place full of old wooden shelves crammed with all manner of photographic gear. Ancient rangefinders sit alongside the latest laser guided techno baubles while 35mm and medium format film is proudly displayed center stage. Sadly, shops such as this are becoming more rare everyday due to the ever encroaching wizardry of the internet. I only wonder where the Elves will shop for their gear when establishments like Manfred's finally succumb and are swallowed into the darkness.

He was kind enough to let me try out this Zeiss Planar he pulled from the display case that separated us. It was full of all kinds of exotic metal boxes and glass filled tubes from the old makers. The ancient weapons of Rollie, Topcon and others glistened dangerously, waiting only to be taken up by the worthy and used in anger.

NEX 7, Zeiss 50/1.7 planar (C/Y mount)
