riley_nordstrom
Ok guys brand new here and will be ordering my first DSLR off ebay soon Canon 30D i really like shooting sports. Mainly football, soccer, Ultimate Frisbee. Generally alot of outdoor sports. Sometimes i will do a indoor sport i was wondering what your recommendations would be for a sport lens that will do a decent job for these sports it dose not have to be the best of the best and most stellar lens ever. Just something that will do well for prints and high school news paper and what not. Thanks!
daverhaas
Riley -

Anytime someone says indoor sports and photos in the same sentence - the 70-200 f2.8 is sure to follow. It is a fairly expensive lens - although you can probably get a Sigma for about 1/2 of the cost of a Canon.

The lenses that are cheaper unfortunately, aren't going to work as well for indoor sports - ones such as the 70-300 or 55-200.

The other alternative is 2 lenses - a 70-300 or 55-200 for outdoor sports and a shorter 50 mm f1.4 or 1.8 for indoor sports. Typically in indoor sports you are a lot closer to the action so zoom range isn't that big of an issue. Unless of course you are stuck in the bleachers or doing hockey, swimming or something you can't get close to.

Dave

User_1172872
If you are on a very tight budget I suggest you consider the Canon 55-250. Lightweight, image stablized, inexpensive, and surprisingly good. Almost never used examples seem to be widely available as well. And if you upgrade to another [APS-C] Canon in the future you won't be taking a chance on compatiblity. Of course like any lens with a 5.6 maximum aperture, difficult to use indoors. Hope this helps.

phule
The Canon 55-250mm is well under $300 and recommended. Outdoor sports would be fine with it.
