Canon or Nikon, which is better value?

i like my camera. i'm glad i got it. i like it better than the camera i don't have.
how 'bout you? do you like your camera?

That's exactly the problem - I like my E-3 and Digilux 3 (my first DSLR), transportability between the camers mean that I can use my Leica 14-50 on the Oly, but industry standards keep creeping up, mainly files sizes and resolution for magasine ads seem to be going the same way as the old days with film, when medium/large format was the base requirement.

The fact that I like my cameras but they are being squeezed out means that I have to look at the limited range of alternatives and making sense of reviews tests etc just becomes totally confusing, add one-eyed brand loyalty into that, and, believe me, its a nightmare.

Life would be easy if Olympus had a new flagship model with equivalent output to 5Dmk2 or d700 or the top of the rangers. So what I was hoping for in this discussion was some pointers. May be links to pictures that members have taken with either 5Dmk2 or d700. (without too much PP tweaking) My hunch is the Canon will handle complex tonal range better, it would probably be the landscape photog's choice. d700 better for low light and action. I really can't work out which has the better colour. My observation would be that Nikon is a bit cold and hard and Canon's OK but lacks sparkle/freshness in comparison with Oly.

And then comes the crazy question of lenses.

All the best Clive

There is a current thread on the Nikon forum which questions the relative value of Nikon vs. Canon

So, since that thread was closed because it ended up in the classical foolish C vs N debate, you decided to open another one, which has already degraded into a N vs C debate...

Makes lot of sense to me ;-)

That thread was closed because the Nikon Forum has an aversion to certain topics. It seems odd to me, since obviously there are still many people who would like to hash out said topics until the end of time. If a certain subgroup of slime-dwellers wants to argue about the relative merits of competing manufacturers until they are old and grey, why not let them? In fact, there should be a "Nikon vs Canon" forum specifically to give these people a place to argue without interfering with the rest of us. Besides, who doesn't like a good brand-slam once in a while?

Should this imply that the same thread, titled "Is Nikon better value than Canon?" and phrased accordingly, would have been better received in the Canon forum? I don't know why but I'm skeptical.

I don't believe dpreview has ceased operations. The Nikon and the Canon fora over there are fantastic places to practice brand-bashing at a professional level, and they are rich of exceptionally talented characters in this highly challenging sport ;-).I don't think we need another venue for this.
This one being a photography site, not a gear site, I personally appreciate the fact that most people here actually use the cameras they buy and thus tend to notice by personal experience that brand wars are meaningless. Efforts by moderators to preserve this situation are appreciated by me.

Cheers
