brad_herman1
All; I have an M6 with a 35mm F2 ASPH Summicron. I probably don't need wider at this time, so what should be my next lens? Here are my thoughts: 1.) 50mm F2 Summicron 2.) 50mm Summarit 3.) Zeiss ZM 50mm F2 Planar 4.) 75mm Summarit or other?? Thanks, Brad
SolaresLarrave
A Summicron 90mm should to the trick.
michael_a._shapiro
It depends on whether you need a 50 or a 90. All the 50's you mentioned are good. Toss a coin. BTW, do get a 90 rather than a 75.
michel_leclerc
Michael, why would you get a 90mm over the 75mm?
ronald_moravec1
How can someone else tell you what you need? Buy the lens you have missed the most shots so far by not having. If you have not missed any, do not buy another lens. 75 is a nice average companion to a 35, but that`s my opinion and not right for you.
graham_line
What is it you can't shoot with the 35? Ronald is right.
marek_fogiel
I have just had a long look through a book by Gianni Berengo Gardin - I believe most of his best shots were done with a 28mm, most best shots of HCB have been done with a 50mm, YOU have to decide if you want to see less or more. SCL
What are you shooting that the 35 isn't giving you the results you want? You sort of asked a question without giving enough information to guide you. Personally, over the years I've preferred a 35 and 90mm lens kit on the M series cameras. hankh
I have the M7 with a 24,35,50,90,135. When traveling I use the 35 f2 45%,24 40%, 50 f2 5%,90 f2 9%,135 f4.5 1%.

stuart_richardson
35 and 50 feel pretty close to me. I prefer the 35/75 combo and don't much like 90mm's, but as Ronald said, it is really up to you.
Rob F.
The classic Leica outfit is 35, 50, and 90. You didn't talk about any wider lenses than 35, so we won't go there. When I was getting started, I got the 35 first, just as you have. Then I added the 90. That way, I had the full capability of the extremes of the range. I had a "hole in the middle," but I learned to manage. I forced my compositions into one field of view, or the other. Finally I added the 50. (And the 28, and the 75, and the 24, and . . .) So that brings us to the 75. It is a good focal length with the rangefinder camera! And you mentioned 75. I don't think you would have such a "hole in the middle" with a 35 and 75. An idea to sleep on.
vic_.
You had the best kit, and should have kept it. vic_.
PS. Brad, My apologies, I didn't mean to embarrass you. I'm guilty of the same sin at least five times.
ilkka
Are you going to get another lens later? Would that be 50? If not, I would get 75. If I planned to get a 50 later, I would get 90 now. I think 35 and 50 are a bit too close. As is 50 and 75. I have 35 and 75 (and 15). If I had 50, I would get 28 and 90.
brad_herman1
Yeah Vic, you're right. I should have kept the kit that I had. It appears as if we go "full-circle" in certain areas. It just goes to show you how compelling Leicas can be. Brad (:D

vic_.
Paul and Brad, You're right. A lot of buying and selling, but I tell myself it's cheaper than therapy. I have bought and sold the 35mm Summilux Asph six times, and am getting ready to sell it again. I seem to have accumulated 10 bodies and 24 lenses (I missed a sell cycle last year), and it's time to let it all go. So if you're interested, I probably have it. Brad, I bought a lens from you a few years ago, and sold it after a while (so what's new), which is why I was curious. Apologies again, I didn't want to expose you in any way, but it's a disease I cannot seem to shake off. I've even bought some of Paul's stuff. You're both excellent sellers. If you have anything to sell, let me know. Too bad you sold the 28mm, that's the most wanted M lens today because of the M8, and the price premium for it is very high. brad_herman1
Yes. That's a 'bummer'. I'm actually looking for a 50 or a 75, (Summarit ot Summicron), but I'm not sure what I'll end up with 1st. Thanks, Brad
alan_w1
I have a 90mm f2 that I use a lot (normally set at f2 for depth-of-field reasons) and love it. Great portrait lens that gets me close to my subject. Never tried the 75mm so can't really comment but love my 90mm
brad_herman1
How good is a 90mm F/2.8 Elmarit? I previously had one, and I thought that it was a good lens, but had nothing to compare it to. I have a line on a "New Old Stock" one with the Leica Passport Warranty for $825.00 from a dealer. I know that it's a higher-magnification lens than a 75, but for this price, I can get the 50 and the 90. What do you think? Thanks, Brad
mikal_grass
Get an old Nikkor 85/2.0 that was made for the Leica. I bought one for a couple of hundred bucks a few years ago on an online auction site. I never regretted it for a minute.
robert gordon
What viewfinder magnification does your M6 have? If it's the 0.72 I'd vote for a 50mm lens. I have the current 50mm Summicron but am tempted to buy the new 50mm Summarit simply because of the focusing tab. In all likelihood I'll stick with my Summicron since I use my 35mm for something on the order of 90% of my Leica shooting. Take another 1000 pictures and then make your decision. Good luck.
