As a 40D owner I'm extremely pleased about the 50D as when I eventually upgrade to a 50D or greater my EFs lenses have been worth buying and keeping. Let's hope that there will be some similar investment in crop lenses. I think it must be sour grapes who thought that FF was the only way forward.

The official Canon price on the 50D is $1399. That's what they will sell for (+/- 1%), no matter what prices you see listed in the next few days while things settle down. B&H appears to have tagged on $0.95 as extra profit. No doubt that's their "new item" premium!

By this time next year they should be down to the $1100 region and by this time in 2010, you won't be able to give them away since the D60 will be so much better.

Interesting, but my XTi will be just fine until the 5D is replaced, thanks. I think what everyone has to keep in mind is that

Canon no doubt wants to put the Digic IV on the market and work the bugs out before they release the 5D II. It does raise

the question of the new 5D's sensor, though. Previous postulations of a 16 mp sensor seem a little low now that the 50D is

at 15.1. I'm thinking that 18 mp sounds more like it, without getting too close to 1Ds territory. And if the 50D's low noise

innovations come to the new 5D it will be a welcome addition. Still, the 50D doesn't solve any problems for me (like how to

make my lenses 1.6 times shorter) so I'll pass for now.

What is really shocking is the lack of a 5D replacement. Is Canon basically abandoning that market Niche?

On one level, the 50D is not surprising in that the XSi seems to be very close to the 40D's capabilities, with a higher resolution sensor. . . this makes a 50D a non-shock. But with a Digic 4 and a 15mp sensor. . . .holy tamoly!

I have to agree. . the pixel war appears to be on, and the DSLR shelf life has effectively dropped to 6 monthes. Good to be a consumer.

Nope.

I just got a 40D in May as an upgrade from a 350D/XT, which I owned for three years prior to the upgrade, watching as the Xti, Xsi, and Xs were released with specs surpassing my XT. I've barely had a chance to use my 40D yet, and as expected, Canon releases information about a successor, just as it happened with the 350D when I purchased it. As others have said, I've come to expect this, and I don't let myself care anymore.

I buy cameras when I determine my current camera is either too beat up, or lacks a collection of features that I now need, and not when a new model is release. My next camera will probably be a full-frame model, to supplement my two crop cameras, and I don't expect to need a replacement/upgrade for the 40D until at least the "60D" or maybe even the "70D" should they be built.

Don't let it get you down... It is just stuff.

There will ALWAYS be a newer "something" version of the "something" you just bought.

Any of you using any Apple products know what I am talking about :) At least, unlike the Apple stuff, you can use your 40D as the lenses are the same and will not change mount in the foreseeable future.

Ah dunno I have a one year old 40D and have no sourgrapes about the 50D. It's cool. Maybe I'll buy one and use the 40D

for ghetto criusin.' The more the merrier. I shot thousands of images and enjoyed the hell outta it. And even the dullest of us know a new

model is always waiting in the wings. Sheesh, every dad burn thang is life is replaced and upgraded. As soon as I got

married, hordes of hot women were suddenly all around me and I had to run for cover. I bought a new Accord Coupe and 6

months later Honda redesigned it. All my Macs and iPods were upgraded as soon as I bought them. Once you get over the

little emotional upheaval you realize your stuff works fine and life is good. If you chase after the latest and greatest all

the time you will have no peace or stability. Well, the hot women dropping from the ceiling all the time is rather disconcerting. New

computers and cameras I can deal with...

Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see.

I too have recently bought a 40D. Its a great camera. It would appear from the hype that the ISO performance of the 50D is indeed better than the 40D despite the MP jump. Lets wait and see. As has been said before the upgrade is all about competition and market share. Nikon has a number of DSLs for people to choose from.

Here is a quote from DPReview: "Almost exactly a year after the arrival of the EOS 40D, Canon has announced the 50D, which we're assured will be a sister-model, rather than a replacement." That sounds like marketing to me.

And lets not forget that Canon's corporate aim is not just to make the best or most appropriate imaging devices but rather to make money for its shareholders (and senior executives).

Cheers, Bob

Okay so I have a little envy of that 15.1 pix - that is rocking cool - but so was the I-Phone and I still don't own one of those... I am hoping the 40D comes down in price and will buy another one of those... and hold out for my 5D full frame which is what I have had my sites on... as my Computer Geek beloved says there will always be some new technolgy that will make you swoon... I hear lots of swooning by my canon friends... I'm in there too - just makes our businss better...

Honestly, the 15mp doesn't impress me. My 6mp 10D has plenty of pixels. But improved high iso performance. . . . honestly, that WILL make you stand up and take notice. All of a sudden, shots that used to require flash now can be shot with ambient light. . . . .. that DOES change the way you take pictures.

So. . .if the 50D is clean at ISO 3200. . . life will continue to get better.

Do you remember the 20D to 30D (non) upgrade? Gads. Thank goodness Nikon stepped up and is now giving Canon some SERIOUS competition.

Guys I'm keeping my 30D, although I would love to upgrade to the 50D. The reason why is I would probably get nothing for it if I trade it in especially with the 40D on the market. Are all those new features going to help me get better pictures probably, but is the 50D going to help me get some new customers, probably not. What I'm thinking about doing is making a small cut-out that says "EOS 50D" and taping it to my Canon 30D. Then I'll just pretend I have a new camera. See you at the next Canon EOS party.

I just upgraded from a Digital Rebel (300D) to a 40D about a month and a half ago, and am very happy. But I can't lie

and say I don't I feel a little burned, since I would have gladly waited another couple months for a 50D. Its not that I

was playing the waiting game, I just never felt compelled to upgrade till recently. Anyways, I will probably just wait for

the 70D to come out and upgrade then since I am pretty cheap and wait 3 generation cycles or more before I change

my gear.

I have to say, I don't understand all this keeping up with development nonsense any more. I used to want the

latest version of this and that and then realised how much money I was wasting. I think it is an age thing!

I have recently got more into photography and bought a 2nd hand 30D body (my wife already has the 40D), in

excellent condition and great shots. The only reason I could imagine upgrading is when I become a much more

accomplished photographer and feel that a change in equipment will help me step up a level. For that reason I

tend to ignore most latest product launches.

I think it is important to remember, it's what's behind the camera, not in it, that takes the great photos.

For most part I don't think 50D will help, at least current users of 40D to take better pictures. More megapixels will not help you take better pictures or enhance your photography skills, there are features that can help you take better pictures and improve your skills, a list of such upgrades for 40D may include

-100% finder with bright clear view for architecture shots.

-better metering that can identify backlit or other complex lightning situations

-smaller shutter lag and blackout time to help you capture the "moment" when things happen quickly

-more reliable AF, especially in tracking mode to reduce the chance of missing that perfect "shot"

-lower noise and better dynamic range to produce higher quality pictures and better tones in available light

unfortunately all of above is missing in the 50D. The only feature that I can imagine might make a difference is the new VGA LCD screen, you can at least review your images and check focus in the field and avoid filling your flash drive with bad pics-

I quit trying to keep up with the next step philosphy when I bought the 1DM11. I then realized i was just chasing my tail advancing one feature at a time. I'm still getting photos published with images taken with the 1DMark 11 and with film images. I can live without the next few steps a while longer. i also don't have to keep upgrading my computer to handle the larger files.
