sergey-afanasyev
The problem is that the number of views for the last two photos i uploaded is 0 even though i posted them both to the critique forum approximately 2 weeks ago and i got ratings. Who does know what happened?
joshroot
Yes, it's broken. Yes, it's annoying. Yes, I'm trying to get it fixed. http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00Pc7I
Leonard-just-Leonard
this is a recording, way low on the priority list http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00Pc7I
Leonard-just-Leonard
D'oh looks like the baby is keeping Josh up, beat me to it with the exact same thread. there is a Search function that can track down such questions Sergey
joshroot
To be fair, it's not "low" on the list, it's just turning out to be a larger issue than we had thought.
bobatkins
Naw, I think it's a plot. I'm not quite sure how it works or who benefits from it, but there has to be some secret reason why the view counter isn't working. Maybe Josh is taking all the counts for himself and selling them on the black market.
joshroot
Actually, I found a liquor store that accepts page-views.
j.kivekas
If I've got it correctly the last time the counters worked was about mid May and mid June is now approaching. Now, it must be a big problem then and most likely to do with the inadequate server services rather than the PN applications. The counter views are essential not only to members but also crucial to the business side of the PN.<p> I really try to be constructive here. The truth is in a month a capable programmer can do miracles. I don't know how the development work is organized, but, I think it should be reviewed objectively in the light of what has been accomplished how the site has functioned. The situation hasn't left a good impression honestly, no matter how it looks from inside. But I am convinced, seeing the frustration in the answers by Bob and Josh, that everything needed will be done in a swift order.<p> I recommend to study TPS, Kaizen and e.g. 5whys method (google) to prevent this happening again. lex_jenkins
<i>"What's happening, Josh. We need to talk about your TPS reports. It's just we're putting new coversheets on all the TPS reports before they go out now. So, if you could just go ahead and take care of that, that'd be juuussst greeeaaat." --</i> Bill Lumbergh, photo.net quality control sub-vice-manager for extraordinarily insignificant details
j.kivekas
Lex, maybe if you don't know what you are talking about. The best organisations in this world use TPS and it's derivatives. The impression you give in your message is something that takes place at e.g. GM and it is a catastrophe - for everyone. TPS is not about paperwork, it is about getting rid of everything unessential - muda. It is about getting everything work for the basic motivation. What ever you do, it has got to increase the added value. TPS is not about quality documents or documentation procedures.
pmj
Juha -- maybe I'm missing your point entirely, but maybe you should watch <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0151804/">Office Space</a>.

j.kivekas
Patrick Hudepohl, you are one of the programmers, right? How come you didn't mention that.<p>William, actually it is not Josh's shop. PN is owned by NameMedia, and guess what, the content is owned by - US, the members.<p>PN lists in its media kit that there are 5 million visits each month, 65 million page views a month - this is known because of counters - that used to work.<P>Again, I am sure the guys do their best and this problem is solved a.s.a.p. without any buts. I just hope that it is a question of days rather than weeks.
joshroot
For a guy who doesn't work here, you sure know a lot about everything Juha. Thank god I've got you to tell how my job should be done. I promise you, it doesn't get annoying at all.
j.kivekas
OK, I am out of this conversation but I'd still like to know when we can wait the counters working again?
pmj
I'm not sure why I should mention I'm one of the programmers, particularly since I don't know how the view counters are supposed to work. I'm sure that Jin e.a., who do know, will fix it when time allows.
bobatkins
As I said, it's a plot. We obviously have our reasons for keeping views secret. You just can't figure out what they are, so I guess we're winning. I second Patrick's movie recommendation by the way. It's an excellent training film. joshroot
If anyone knew when they were going to be working again, don't you think I would have said something? It's not like having angry users makes my job any easier. Lord knows I don't need more complaining email.
Michael R Freeman
>"The counter views are essential not only to members ..." To the site users, no they are not. It's inconsequential trivial data with absolutely zero impact on your life. Sheesh! It's a view counter for crying out loud. It's not that important. When it's functioning again, you can see your precious page views. Until then, may I diplomatically suggest that everyone stop getting so worked up about it!? j.kivekas
Sorry, I have to come back for this<p> "<i>"The counter views are essential not only to members ..."<br> To the site users, no they are not. It's inconsequential trivial data with absolutely zero impact on your life. "</i><p> Michael, there has been a lot of complaints in several threads about this matter which proves it is important for many. For me the view numbers are the only real objective measure along with the subjective comments. Ratings mean nothing me ever since I decided to submit for written critique only. View counts are not spoiled by bots, so far, or anonymous 3/3s. View counts tell a lot about the visibility potential of a photo, it's ability to captivate the viewer.<p> Ok, now I am out.<p> ps.<br>Josh, sorry for my hard words, but this matter is important to me, and to many others. pmj
You do realize that there are 600,000 users on this website? Even if 100 of them complain, it's still not "many" by any means.
lex_jenkins
<i>"...and it's not okay because if they take my view counter then I'll set the new servers on fire... I specifically said 'No grain in my photographs' and there were grains in my photographs, BIG grains, and ... and no view counters, and I could report this to the proper authorities and take my traveler's checks to another photography website and, and put strychnine-bots in this one..."</i> -- Milton Waddams
Leonard-just-Leonard
Hey Lex, there is a NEW WINNER in the "Let's complain about something contest" My long time favourite 3/3 Ratings has taken a beating with this Views Counter soap opera mini-series. Taking the Oscar for his leading role is Josh with new and biting commentary never seen before. His character is showing a new depth perhaps influenced by endless nights of no sleep and possible diaper rash hands ;o As always, Bob gets the nod for supporting voice of reason and a touch of dry wit that many are sure to enjoy for years to come. The emerging sub-plot seems to be "Changing a photo after it has ratings attached" As always, I look forward to this new season albiet with a bit of trepidition over 35mm vs digital upstaging the whole story line. tampabaybrokers
hmmm ...after reading this whole mess i vertually died laughing , however there is one slight thing no one has address in regards to the page views , Correct me if i am wrong .....But the ranking of this years top portfolios is determined by total page views ...yes ...Sooooo with problems you had in past regarding images recieving 400,000 views now with counter not working at all ....does this not influence and drasticly skew all members who were involved when counters were going at 100x each view ......just curious ...bored and enjoyed reading last post so thats my 2 cents worth ...
