How do you get best results w TMY in 35mm?

Recommended Posts

It may just be that I don't like the look oftmy in 35mm, or that I don't yet know how to make it work. The main problem I've had is a kind of flatness especially in the midtones (skin tones) which I haven't had w other films, like tx and np. There also seems to be great variability in how it looks depending on the type of light, much more so than other films.

Hi Gabriel.

I use TMY primarily for portraiture, and get consistently excellent results. I find it to be the most predictably reliable film I've used. I always shoot TMY at EI 400, usually handheld in available light. I've never used HC-110 with TMY.

I have never been crazy about TMY in HC-110. I love TMX in HC-110 but not TMY. I have gotten my best results for TMY by exposing at 320 and developing in Microdol-X 1:3. Going from memory my times were right on with the Massive Development Chart at 16 minutes at 24C.

TMY has a unique spectral sensitivity. It seems to produce darker skin tones than TX or HP5+. Some people do not like this effect, especially in portraiture, and it is even more emphasized by developers producing an upswept curve on the film, such as HC-110 (dil. A or B). Diluted Xtol (1+1 or 1+2) will give you a bit different tonality with lighter skin tones. As for me, I used to hate TMY, but then I soaped it in Xtol and changed my opinion - still prefer TX, HP5+ or Neopan 400, but TMY is not bad either.
