if the lens is bought in USA and shipped by UPS, then UPS will act as collection agent for any import duties and VAT, currently 17.5%. At the US price of GBP1,193 the VAT alone is £208.77 wiping out any saving. There will also be a handling charge from UPS and your credit card co might have a less generous exchange rate.

Insurance is most certainly worth it.
It might be a legal requirement, a contractual requirement or just give you peace of mind. As an Englishman, I would not travel to USA without travel insurance, as I could not afford very much in the way of medical treatment. So far I've never claimed, so the insurance co has made a profit on me, but it was certainly worth it.
For my photographic kit, I never buy extended warranties, but I do have an all risks policy to cover loss, or damage to my kit, as currently I could not afford to replace my 500f4 or my IDmk2N.

"I have shot Canons for over 25 years and this has always been a feature on the mid level or better film cameras. My A1, F1Ns, T90s, EOS1NRS and EOS 1Vs all have this feature (only my AE1 does not) "
Mid range cameras such as the EOS5 and the EOS3 did not not have one, they relied on a piece of plastic on the strap.
It's not that big a deal; just use the rubber cover supplied, or buy a 1 series camera

The EF85mm f1.8 lens was not specifically designed for digital. Perhaps you're thinking of the EFS 17-85 mm zoom which is only suitable for some of the 1.6 crop camera including the XTi.
The crop factor applies to all lens. Strictly speaking, the focal length does not change, the factor tells you what lens would be needed on a full frame camera, either film or digital, to give the same angle of view.

The best lens might not be a Canon lens, but a Sigma 120-300 f2.8

I recently bought an EOS 1Dmk2N (from Warehouse Express, a reputable supplier)
having previously used an EOS1Dmk2 and an EOS20D
I normally use Canon's EOS viewer utility to view the raw file and to convert
to TIFFs for further work in Photoshop.
I have also updated the viewer utility, using the disc supplied with the new
camera.
My problem is that the utility viewer can't display the raw files taken with
the new camera. It recognises that there is a file there and you can view the
EXIF info, but the thumb nail image is greyed out.
The camera's firmware is 1.1.0.
Can anyone please help?

Simon

You could also try shooting from the end of the pitch rather than the side
-

Address: The Worx Studios
10 Heathmans Road
London SW6 4TJ
nearest tube Parsons Green

Press the zoom button and turn the control wheel on the flash anti clockwise until the m for maual zoom disappears.

Tax would be levied on profits, not gross income.
you also said you were planning on making major purchases. If these are cameras, lenses etc, they might be considered capital expenditure, rather than this year's costs so even though in cash terms you're negative, the IRS might consider you've made a profit and want tax on that profit!

you get a light loss and hence slower shutter speeds, which rather defeats the object of IS.

I've got both the Sigma 120-300 f2.8 and the Canon 1.4 mk11 extender.
There are no compatability problems.
The Sigma is an absolutely superb lens (in one competition, the judge remarked on how sharp the image was) , although big and heavy. You will find a monopod very handy when using this lens.

Further to the above, the reputable shops like Adorama & B&H use reputable shipper like UPS & FedEX, who offer package tracking. It is therefore very likely that you will be subject to duty & VAT.
Some of the sharp operators from the far east who sell on eBay try to defraud the customs by putting falsly low values on the packages or claim that they are gifts. If the Customs find them you could have a whole load of trouble.

Whilst I have not bought anything as expensive as the lens you're thinking about, I've twice bought from Adorama. Adorama used UPS to ship the goods and I ended up paying duty, VAT and a handling fee. I simply wrote out a cheque to the UPS delivery driver when he delivered the goods to me.
As a rough guide you need to allow about 20-25% over the published price to cover the additional costs of getting the goods legally imported into the UK.
Hope this helps

all that happens is that on a digital camera you are cropping off the edges of the image.
Imagine you took an picture on 35mm slide film and then mounted in a slide mount which instead of having a opening of 36 x 24mm had an opening of 22.5 x 15mm. You would only have the central part of your original image. That's what's happening with a sensor smaller than full frame.
As the focal length hasn't changed, the aperture hasn't changed.

http://www.canon.co.uk/for_home/product_finder/cameras/ef_lenses/zoom_lenses/EF_2880mm_f2556V_UMS/
the IV / V in the lens name means it's the fourth / fifth verison of Canon's 28-80mm lens
The general view it that it's not that good a lens, It's a Kit lens supplied with many lower model film cameras.
Unless you were offered it at a very low price, there are better options

deleting any previous calibrations that the camera might have?
Also make sure that the eye piece is clean

Nikon make detail changes to their mount (and their cameras) more often than Man Utd change their shirt design! They have a whole alphabet soup of lens variants
There are people who can get better compatability with Nikon lenses on EOS bodies than they can on Nikon cameras, because the changes are so radical.

if the lens size (72mm) is less than the filter size (77mm) you need a step up ring
You need a step down ring when the filter is smaller than the lens eg 67mm filter on a 72mm lens
The convention is lens to filter, not filter to lens
-
you will be fine if you use the camera's own tripod mount
Good place to handle the current EOS digital lineup with no sales pressure

Sounds like the display thay had at Focus on Imaging earlier in the year, also at the NEC.
If you keep an eye on the photo magazines, a few of the retailers have exhibitions where you can try new kit in a non-sales environment. I'm thinking in particular of London Camera Exchange.
