In particular the P series, to avoid any vignetting problems.
The filters I would recommend to start with are a circular polariser, graduated grey filters, red and orange for black and white, and possibly a warm up filter.

I had an earlier version of this lens, the 20-35mm. I got rid of it
when I changed from an EOS 5 to an EOS 3 and found that it wouldn't
work with the EOS 3. I replaced it with the Canon 20-35.

The Canon is optically better, although the Tokina is perfectly
adequate particualrly if stopped down to F8 or smaller, focuses
faster and has a non-rotating front element.

The Tokina is well made, it has a metal body and feels at least as
substantial as the Canon.

If you want to shoot sports, I think you need a long lens.
My suggestions Canon's 75-300, (if you can afford it, the IS version)
Tokina 80-400 or Sigma 135-40. These last two are optically very good lenses, but don't focus quite as fast as Canon lenses. They focus fast enough for something like football or rugby, but might be slightly too slow for motor sport.
