The Gold MAM-A DVD's were touted as an archival option for optical media. Well, they are marginally better than AZO silver DVD's, but not by much. In sun tests the AZO Silver DVD's died on average at 25 days of sun. The Gold MAM-A DVD's lasted 27 days in the sun. The old Kodak 100 years Gold DVD's lasted 33 days.

The Kodak DVD's were the best I've tested other than M-Disc. But Kodak discontinued them long ago. Any current Kodak Gold production is said not to be the same as the original production. (But I have not tested them.) The Kodak Gold disc I tested was one of the last of the 2007 production. M-Disc on the other hand lasted a year in the sun with no issues whatsoever.

Today I went to restock my inkjet printable 4.7gb M-Disc DVD's and they look to be discontinued. Even the branded non-printable M-Disc DVD are gone. All they have is Blu-ray M-Disc and the higher capacity multi- layer M-Disc. What a mess. I looked all over hell and nothing. Some people are selling a box or a handful here or there at inflated prices.

I am a big user of the 4.7gb M-Disc with my archival work. Don't know if it is something temporary or not. But have gone back to the crummy Gold MAM-A discs and am saving my 73 remaining 4.7GB M-Disc for important projects.

Gold discs don't suffer from disc bronzing as far as I can tell. Once your silver discs start bronzing, the writing is on the proverbial wall.

Gold discs are a better option that silver AZO discs, but in my opinion, they are overpriced for what they offer.

And as far BD-R for archiving. Here are some tests I did. All BD-R media is not the same.

My question is: Is putting a watermark on a photo enough for someone not to print it or replicate it as their own? Or do I also need to make the resolution smaller?

People don't care, especially for memes. Low res, watermark or not. If I was you, I'd be more worried about your photos dying with you than people reusing. Maybe if you are in it for the $$, then worry some.

One wonders how many "digital photo treasures" will be lost to future generations , due to the relatively short "shelf life" of digital media.

Leica perfected the rangefinder. But the cost is stupendous. I was always hoping Fuji would have made a Leica knockoff for half the price of a Leica. And they could have improved on the Leica sensor that is usually outdated by the time it comes out. For the money they charge, Leica sensors should be top shelf. Maybe Leica has changed, I have not kept up with them. But that was how it was.

This company produced a nice looking camera. But not for me. If they shrunk it down like an old half frame 35mm, then maybe. But it has to be Leica like, all manual.

OP... covid mess up my street work in NYC. I'm old and 30 years in the darkroom wrecked my lungs, so not taking any chances riding the subway. Then in April of '21 I injured my plantar fascia and could not walk much. If you can't walk, street work is kinda tough. 9 months later and foot is still bad. I can walk a few blocks on a good day then it hurts the rest of the day.

I do lots of archival work, scans and working with cine' film. VHS archive, audio archive. No shortage of work for me. Plus, I have 9 years of my own photos that need looking through.

A few years ago, on a rainy Sunday I went into B&H. shot infrared flash for about 20 minutes out of boredom. Not caught once. Maybe I can get to in in 2022. If not, they are all backed up on SD cards, HDD, Blu-ray disc and M-disc.

Here is a film I just found on a 'pig in a poke' reel. I scanned it a few days ago. The Segregated Swimming Hole. It was faded Anscochrome, so turned it B&W.

I just need a sponsor to by me a 16mm sound scanner. All I have is a silent 16mm scanner. Optical sound can be recovered with it, but it is very laborious to do it. I write to art philanthropists...but never get a reply.

Smartphones are great, no doubt about it. But, the very small size of the photosites can only be mitigated by software to a point.

M43??

M43 is a great camera...except they are hard to adjust manually when shooting on the fly. I used them extensively for year or so but had to give them up. I could only shoot on the dummy setting. I couldn't figure out how to adjust them.

If they made one like the old Olympus Pen 1/2 frame 35mm cams they would be a fantastic street cam. It would be stupendous. But it must be Leica like. Too bad they never came out with one. I wrote to Olympus numerous times to suggest, but never a reply.

OP, if worried, travel with cheaper camera gear. That is what I do if in a dangerous local. I have 3 levels of gear. Disposable, medium and high end.

Sometime change is good, sometimes it is not. I don't have many photo forums I'm on.

I use a small warehouse cart for loadin-loadout. It's convertible between upright and flat, which is how I use it. It has 12" rubber tires which roll over door sills, gravel and grass easily, A folding nose piece keeps stacked cases secure. The entire truck folds flat and fits in my mini-van. I've had it for over 30 years. The overall length is about 5' including handles, and it fits in small passenger elevators.

The cart is not for moving heavy things, it is for buying square inches for temp work. Just ordered another #50 cart. Love it! I can buy a few extra square inches of work space.

A guy I met that had taken a trip to Tokyo told me in Japan they don't go by square feet with apartments...they go by square inches! I guess he was joking, but I can understand. I'm grateful for a few more square inches.

Folding carts as very helpful with temporary work, moving stuff on location or organizing jobs that have a tendency to expand.

I got mine at 1and1 ionos Word Press for only $5 per month with 25GB storage. The initial learning curve of creating a layout was hard for me, but I had it figured out an running in just a few days.

I keep in touch with the WV Archives and History Dept with every update. The former director of the markers program and his successor both email regularly as we both have questions and answers for each other. They keep their state online database updated with my posts.

 

I gather all of my data for each page in a Word document saved as a web page. That way, I just copy and paste onto the online WordPress template, and I have a backup that I could (sort of) quickly rebuild the site if lightning strikes.

Thanks, I have a ton of WordPress sites already. I've been all over the internet over the last 15 years. And much of it has been deleted.

Now, if you plan to try to contribute your collection/s to special collection libraries; one thing to consider is to not tell them you have it all on the internet. It is OK to have a sampling, but I've been rejected a number of times from donating material because the small minded curator said it is available on the internet.

Stupid policy...but that is how some small minded curators think.

Searching a huge archive on the internet is not the same as having it at your finger tips on the computer. What is on the internet, probably is not of the resolution as could be available with the acquisition. And lastly, the internet is not archival. A lot of what I've put on the internet has been deleted by the people running the websites. And even if you don't offend anyone, once you stop paining the bill your website goes poof! Same with the cloud...30 days in arrears and it gets deleted.

Here is something interesting, a VHS tape of music boxes and automata. I had over 1100 hundred tapes in the collection, but a flood in '01 wiped them out. Having rebuilt the collection over the years it is about 700+ tapes now. Finding working Beta machines is the toughest!

Well, in the past few months, my wife and I have been able to go out and photograph around 275 markers (out of about 1,000). I think I have learned some techniques for getting at least a decent photo in difficult lighting situations. The hardest photos are definitely due to backlighting, especially in the early morning when the sun is low. Some of the time, I can get away with fill flash if I step back and zoom in, so there is more distance between me and the marker. However, I can't use fill flash if there are other regular flat-metal road signs around as they are very reflective and show up as big white spots in the photos. Very distracting.

 

While certainly not professional-level, I am pleased with 90% of the photos - realizing I am doing it more for documenting and reference than "making great art". I also like that I can do almost all of my photos without being around people (COVID concerns). And, I like getting out in the fresh air and taking photos.

I'm working more on history myself. I hurt my foot a few months ago and am lucky to hobble around the house. Don't know if it will ever heal up like it was. No street photography anymore. I'm working on my collections of rationing in WW2 and agriculture.

I never used to put my name on on anything. But I keep getting thrown out and my accounts deleted. Hundreds of thousands of uploads go poof. I had 48 Tumblrs at one time...all gone. Lots of other places gone as well. So I got pissed and put my name on lots of stuff now. Just to show at one time there was this Archive. I don't think you will have that trouble OP.
