My first camera was a Pentax Spotmatic purchased while studying judo in Tokyo during the Summer of 1969. It had a stop-down meter with a needle that had to be centered in the finder. I really miss that camera and found the (now archaic) meter to be a joy to use. So I don't think the match needle meter of the FTb-N or F-1 New would be anything but fun to use. My images here in the Rocky Mountain West are almost entirely of landscapes so they are not rushed.

I am and always have been convinced beyond any shadow of doubt that black and white film photography is the highest form of the art. My modest camera collection includes an AE-1 (bought new in 1979), a very beautiful A-1 and a just purchased FTb-N (it's being shipped as we speak). I have resisted getting an F-1 or F-1 New for decades but have now decided that the time could be right. There are some awesome examples on eBay right now. Is the F-1 merely a status symbol with bragging rights for us old timers or is it actually Canon's version of the Holy Grail? I am quite serious about my need for some guidance here.

I would prefer a black bodied one with or without a lense but would consider a chrome body. It must be in near flawless appearance and function. A recent CLA by a competent professional is highly desirable. I searched eBay but that source most often leads me to lose faith in humanity.

KoolM1: Download the instruction manuals for both. You can easily find them onlline. That may help you decide which is more appropriate for your needs.

Regardless of the merits of the functional features it is hard to beat the beautiful appearance of the A-1. It is a work of art. I don't know about the OP but now you've got me somewhat interested in a black FTb-N. I'm too much of a traditionalist to appreciate the look of the T70-90 series. I put up with the modern shape of my T6i only because it's digital.

i have both but use the A-1 much more. I'd really like to know specific reasons as to why some of the above posters say they would not use either. I am completely satisfied with mine.

The reviews for the MeFOTO Road Trip S carbon fiber tripod on the Net were excellent and the sale price is $80 off so I just ordered it. Thanks to all for the good advice.

I haven't been inside of another building other than my own home since the middle of March so thrift shops are out for now. Besides I really like new things. My family was quite poor when I was young until my parents business took off after a few years. The joy of getting brand new clothes, books and toys has never worn off.

Can anyone recommend a good light weight tripod to use while hiking? I will not be using any lenses larger than a 135/3.5 with a Canon 2x doubler. I'd like to keep the price below $200.

Jim: That film is amazingly sharp! By comparison, my 400TX photos look like they were taken during a snow storm. I might just have to try some. My only problem would be the 80ASA as I really like to use colored filters and small apertures for landscapes.

No. That was just part of my early education. Deb never met her. Actually the gal was an absolutely stunning brunette.

I developed this yesterday. Camera: Canon A-1 50mm/1.4 with a yellow filter on 100TMAX developed with D-76. C'est moi with my Suzuki TU250X.

I develop my negatives with D-76. My prints are developed with Dektol. Old habits die hard. N'est ce pas?

Berry Creek Fall in Big Basin Redwoods State Park, CA. taken with my AE-1 in the early '80s. I present this photo because the entire park burned over the last few days. Big Basin just west of Silicon Valley was a beautiful beloved place that will always and forever be close to my heart.
